Pavement Whispers: exciting new bars, Asian eats and ice-cream sandwiches

From whispers of new Asian-inspired eats to epic ice-cream sandwiches and places you can pour your own beer, The Weekend Edition Gold Coast is always on the search for the latest news on the Gold Coast, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Mister Fitz’s Finest Ice Cream
Get ready to abandon all good intentions and #cleaneating goals because Mister Fitz’s Finest Ice Cream is venturing south to The Strand at Coolangatta. Known for creating amazingly Insta-worthy ice-cream sandwiches, Mister Fitz scoops up some seriously delectable flavours including passionfruit mojito, butterscotch and a magnificent concoction of banana, brown sugar and bacon.

Society of Florida
If you’re a fan of Burleigh Social get excited because you’ll soon be able to get your social fix of an evening at Jarrod, Ray and Kane’s new cafe/wine bar, Society of Florida. The new venue is at the base of Florida Gardens in Broadbeach Waters and will offer a slightly more polished look and feel than its Burleigh-based counterpart but will retain the same cool vibes locals have come to know and love. Oh, and there will be wine. Lots and lots of wine. The lads are working around the clock to open the doors in May.

Taps Surfers Paradise
Forget waiting in endless queues at the bar for a beer, Taps Surfers Paradise is cutting out the middleman and inviting you to pour your own! The brews will change weekly so you’ll never tire of the same old brew and there will be an epic menu featuring burgers, toasties and chicken wings. The new watering hole is expected to open in May but if you just can’t wait, you could always pay a visit to Taps Fortitude Valley.

Jimmy Wah’s
Burleigh Heads’ culinary landscape is set to expand into delicious new territory with a brand new modern Vietnamese restaurant and bar, Jimmy Wah’s. The venue will dish up fresh, fragrant and healthy Vietnamese cuisine that was inspired by Head Chef Jake Cooley’s own travels around South-east Asia and will be open for lunch and dinner six days a week. The exciting new venue is a joint project between Jake and Shelly Greaves, who used to own Verve in Broadbeach, and is expected to open in May 2016.

California Cantina
The lads from California Tacos in Burleigh Heads and NightQuarter have something exciting up their sleeve with a brand new venue coming soon to Capri on Via Roma in Isle of Capri. California Cantina will be slightly more upmarket than its casual sister venues and debut a sensational new menu personally created by one of the best chefs in Southern California, Aarti Sanghavi, think grilled snapper and octopus tacos, ceviche and churro chips. It’s also pretty safe to assume there will be more tequila than a small Mexican village.

Hideaway Kitchen & Bar
Scott Imlach, owner of Bine Bar and Dining, has ventured out of Nobbys for his next project, Hideaway Kitchen & Bar. Housed in the old Compadres Mexican on the Gold Coast Highway in Broadbeach, the venue will dish up Asian street-food and will feature a spacious alfresco dining area out the back that will be perfect for long lunches that accidentally end in the wee hours of the morning with a kebab in hand (we’re assuming anyway). Inside, Scott is doing some pretty bold things with graffiti artwork and inside swings. Hideaway Kitchen & Bar is aiming for a mid-June opening.
