Pavement Whispers: new wine bars, patisseries and beachside steakhouses
From whispers of beachside steakhouses to fancy wine bars, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news on the Gold Coast, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …
Dragonfly Espresso and Wine Bar
Chef Michael Smith, who was originally behind Bear Espresso in Robina, is bringing his philosophy of contemporary food to the heart of Broadbeach with his new venture Dragonfly Espresso and Wine Bar. As the name suggests, Dragonfly will be all about espresso, breakfast and lunch by day, before transforming into a modern wine bar by night. We’re told to expect an upmarket menu in a relaxed setting – and given Michael’s culinary pedigree with the likes of Sofitel and Hayman Island, we know the food will be pretty impressive. Dragonfly is located in part of the premises that was formerly occupied by vermouth and tapas bar 1927 (where Franc’s Deli and Espana used to be). The doors are due to open by the end of October – we’ll have all the details for you then.
The Pastry Emporium
If you’re familiar with the glorious housemade sweets and oh-so-flaky pastries from The Pastry Emporium in Bundall, then you’ll be very pleased to know that a second venue is underway in Mermaid Beach. The (new) Pastry Emporium will be located right next door to Lucky Bao in the Markeri Street commercial precinct (formerly a Subway). Due to open in early October, the sweet new venue will be open seven days and will serve Merlo coffee alongside its famous croissants, doughnuts, cakes, savoury pastries, macarons, and fresh artisan breads. We’re very excited for this one – we’ll keep you posted when the doors swing open.
Bondi Grill’e
Popular Coolangatta burger joint Bondi Grill’e is spreading its delicious wings north to Burleigh Heads, with a new venue due to open in early October. Whilst the name will remain the same, the new Burleigh Heads space will be a more of a proper steak house, with around 120 seats, a cocktail bar and a full menu showcasing a number of cuts of steaks. Alongside the steaks, there will be plenty of tapas, as well as fresh, local seafood platters, ribs, burgers and more. The new Bondi Grill’e will be located next door to the soon-to-open Iku Yakitori Bar (Etsu’s new sibling) along the Gold Coast Highway. Keep your eyes peeled, we’ll have all the details in a few weeks time.
Pier B
Those on the northern end, throw your hands in the air – a new health-conscious raw cafe is on its way. Works are underway on Pier B, an espresso and health food bar that is soon to open in the Sanctuary Cove Marine Village. The boho-style cafe will have a focus on raw, vegan, gluten free and organic whole foods. Pier B is due to open in late October – we’ll have all the details for you then.
