Pavement Whispers: next-level cheese tarts, smoked meat, whisky bars, and new coffee hubs

From whispers of whisky bars to cheese-tart giants, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news on the Gold Coast, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Hokkaido Baked Cheese Tart: This is big. Hokkaido Baked Cheese Tart, a hugely popular Malaysian chain, is making its foray into Australia with a new venue in the works at Pacific Fair Shopping Centre. This cheesy giant is renowned across the world for its baked three-cheese tarts. That’s right – three.cheese.tarts. These four-inch parcels of goodness are famous for their rich, creamy flavour and distinctive sweet and savoury taste. To put its popularity in perspective, the openings in Sydney and Melbourne in late 2016 attracted lines that were somewhat reminiscent of an Apple iPhone release. Just the thought of that crunchy shortcrust-pastry base filled with a fluffy blend of three cheeses has our mouths watering. Hokkaido Baked Cheese Tarts, the latest to join the mix of foodie retailers at Pacific Fair, is expected to open between late July and early August. We’ll keep you posted.

Buffalo Sears
: Expect the delicious aroma of smoked meats to fill the air in Burleigh Heads when Buffalo Sears opens its doors late next week. Located beneath the Swell building on the Gold Coast Highway, the new 90-seat New Orleans-style restaurant and bar will be all about authentic smoked meats, cooked low and slow – think brisket, ribs, steaks, pulled pork, chicken (all the good stuff). There will also be a focus on the drinkables, with a wide selection of whiskies, craft beers, wines and hand-crafted cocktails across the menu. Though, we’re told it’s not all about smoked meat, beer and whiskey – Buffalo Sears will cater for a wide range of diners. So, if you’re more of a smoked oyster and champagne type of person, then you’ll be well looked after. Buffalo Sears will also open for breakfast, and we’ve been told to expect everything from hickory-smoked bacon and eggs to a smoked pulled-pork hash to satisfy those breakfast cravings. We’ll have the full details in next week’s issue!

Door 50: Mermaid Beach is about to get a new coffee hang. The location and fine details are being kept under wraps for now, but we’re told Door 50 will be all about the coffee. Alongside daytime brews, the soon-to-open espresso bar will also feature on-the-go savouries and sweets. It’s still a month or two off opening, but keep your eyes peeled for this one – we’ll keep you in the loop with all the details when the doors swing open!
