Pavement Whispers: nude cakes, new poke-bowl hangs and southern coffee hubs

From whispers of poke-bowl restaurants to riverside espresso hangs, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news on the Gold Coast, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Nude Sisters Whole Food Kitchen
If you’re a NightQuarter regular, you may be familiar with popular market stall-holder Nude Sisters and its range of eye-catching raw desserts and cakes. Well, the local duo behind Nude Sisters, Bec Askey and Georgia Homer, are gearing up to open their first standalone wholefood cafe in Mermaid Beach later this month. Nude Sisters Whole Food Kitchen will be located at the Markeri Street commercial space, which is also home to Lucky Bao and The Journal. Expect a vibrant vegetarian menu, with breakfast and lunch options, alongside the Nude Sisters renowned raw cakes, desserts and sweet treats. There will also be whole raw cakes and cheesecakes to buy on the daily, as well as smoothies, Allpress coffee, fresh juices and all-things acai. The new wholefood kitchen is due to open on June 24. Keep an eye on The Weekend Edition for all the colourful details.

Finn Poké
Poke bowls are about to hit Byron Bay in a very big way. Whilst the Hawaiian-style bowls of goodness are seen dotted across menus, Byron Bay’s soon-to-open Finn Poké will become northern New South Wales’ first dedicated poke-bowl restaurant. Finn Poké is the brainchild of Los Angeles food icon and former French Laundry chef Charles Olalia, US-based hospitality guru Jem Jacinto and his sister Joelle Boehnert. The menu will be devoted purely to poke bowls, and is said to combine the fresh, clean flavours of California with the local, organic produce of Byron Bay. Finn Poké will balance fast, casual and fine dining, by giving poke-bowl lovers the choice of dining in the contemporary restaurant or grabbing a freshly made bowl on-the-go. Byron Bay’s first poke-bowl restaurant will open its doors on Fletcher Street on June 17 – we’ll have all the delicious details for you then.

Next Door Espresso
The vacant space on Tweed Heads’ Dry Dock Road, formerly occupied by cafe Dry Dock General Store, is set to get a tasty new tenant. Overlooking Terranora Creek, Next Door Espresso will serve quality coffee and on-the-go eats to start with (including vegan doughnuts!), before stepping into a broader menu. You’ll be able to text ahead for your morning coffee too, so we can expect this one to be a buzzing hub for southerners getting their morning caffeine fix. Next Door Espresso is set to open at the end of June. We’ll keep you posted with all the details.
