Cheers to change – raise your glass for charity during Negroni Week

Here at The Weekend Edition, we really don’t need an excuse to indulge in a tipple or two … but a little extra encouragement doesn’t hurt, right? If drinking cocktails for a cause sounds like your kind of fun, we have some news that is bound to get you excited. From June 4–10, thousands of bars around the world will be mixing up the iconic concoction of Campari, gin and vermouth for Negroni Week, an initiative raising money for a huge variety of charities.

From humble beginnings in 2013 with a starting rate of 100 participating bars, Negroni Week has evolved into a major highlight on the global bartending calendar. Last year’s event saw 7,770 venues in 60 countries all over the world participate in the event, and to date Negroni Week has raised close to $2 million for a variety of charitable causes. It’s pretty much a week-long celebration of the classic cocktail, as well as giving bartenders the opportunity to get a bit creative with homages to the original formula.

So how do you play a part in Negroni Week? Bars around the world have pre-registered on the Negroni Week website, nominating a chosen charity and donating throughout the week – so all you have to do is knock back a Negroni or two at a participating venue. When it’s all done and dusted, Campari Australia will match the donation to the charity supported by Australia’s highest-donating individual venue (up to a maximum amount of $5,000) to celebrate the efforts of all involved. There are more than 40 charities up for assistance this year including OzHarvestSlow FoodWater For People and WE just to name a few.

Want to see where you can sip for change in your neck of the woods? Head to the official Negroni Week website to find a participating venue near you.
