The Gold Coast’s love affair with French pastry is growing deeper by the day. The combination of passion, finesse, sugar and butter is truly alluring, and it seems like we just can’t get enough when it comes to handmade delights like croissants, eclairs and slices of flan patissier. A few days before Christmas, the coast welcomed a brand-new pastry haven by the name of My French Pastries, which has set out to bring the traditional tastes of France to our shores.

Tucked in along Robina Parkway (in Robina Quays Shopping Centre on the corner of Markeri Street), My French Pastries has been a labour of love for French-born Jennifer Marchesi and pastry chef Antonio Marchesi. If you’re a sucker for love stories, get this – they were best friends in primary school in France, then over the years they lost contact (as you do) and after decades they reconnected on Facebook, fell in love, got married and ended up on the Gold Coast! They started My French Pastries three years ago, baking authentic French sweets from their home and wholesaling to various spots across the city. Now, they have decided to go beyond the wholesale realm and bring their delicious creations to more Gold Coast folk with their first retail space and cafe.

While there are a handful of local patisseries and bakeries pushing the boundaries and creating amazing, eye-popping sweets across the coast, My French Pastries aims to take things back to basics, crafting authentic sweet and savoury pastries and cakes that stick to tradition. As Jennifer describes – what’s in their cabinet is what you’d find in a patisserie in the streets of France. It’s what they grew up eating, and they are here to share a piece of their homeland with Gold Coast locals. At My French Pastries you’ll find authentic delights like fresh-fruit tarts, hand-made croissants (including savoury style with ham and cheese and sweet almond croissants), eclairs filled with housemade creme patissiere and dipped in fondant icing, lemon tarts, flaky mille feuille (vanilla slice), chocolate tarts, galette des rois and more. Every single element in each pastry is made from scratch by Antonio (he bakes around the clock and thrives on about four hours sleep), so you can rest assured that this is the real deal. Just be sure to go early so you don’t miss out! Oh, and there’s brews from Supreme Roasters on pour each morning, because you can’t have pastry without coffee.
