The Weekend Series: take a sip trip and tour Southeast Queensland’s best distilleries and breweries

It’s all well and good pouring yourself a drop of your favourite spirit at home or cracking a cold beer from the fridge, but it doesn’t quite compare to sipping from the source. If you are serious about your drink, booking yourself and your crew for a brewery or distillery tour is one of the most enjoyable ways to savour your booze of choice. Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Byron Bay are home to a few enticing tours, which not only give you some insight into how your drop of choice is made, but also allows you to sample the freshest batch before it’s bottled.

Cape Byron Distillery, Byron Bay
Gin-savvy drinkers will already be well acquainted with Brookie’s Gin – the award-winning spirit that has been racking up awards at home and abroad. Cape Byron Distillery is where this magical elixir is made, and the establishment regularly opens its doors for tours every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The distillery tour takes punters on a journey from the Brook family’s distilling origins, detailing how the brand imbues native botanicals into this divine spirit. With a Brookie’s and tonic in hand, visitors are guided through the distillery and rainforest, before enjoying an in-depth tasting of Cape Byron’s range. Burleigh Brewing, Burleigh Heads
One of the Gold Coast’s most beloved craft-beer outfits is also a great spot for a boozy pilgrimage. The on-site taphouse has long been a popular hangout location, but its the access all areas Backstage with the Brewmaster that is perfect for serious sippers. This small-group experience gives ticket holders a look into the brewing process (guided by Burleigh Brewing’s brewmaster Brennan) while they enjoy beers with the crew that created them. Beenleigh Artisan Distillery, Eagleby
Between Brisbane and the Gold Coast sits the famed Beenleigh Artisan Distillery – the home of some of the finest Queensland-produced rum. Loaded with heritage and a rich history, Australia’s oldest registered distillery is a must-visit for anyone with a comprehensive home cocktail bar. Beenleigh Artisan Distillery offers a tour of the distillery’s inner workings, followed by your choice of two tasting experiences. The Classic Rum Experiences allows visitors the chance to sample Beenleigh’s core range of rums, while the Distiller’s Selection offers samples of some more off-the-wall drops. Lord Byron Distillery, Byron Bay
One of the newest faces in the Byron Bay micro-distilling scene is the crew from Lord Byron. Specialising in handcrafted spirits made from sustainably sourced and natural ingredients, the zero-waste Lord Byron Distillery concocts a range of aged rums, limoncellos, vodkas and bespoke gin. Owners and operators Brian and Helen Restall look to educate visitors on where their drinks come from and how they are made, guaranteeing no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives feature in any of their drinks. In addition to a tour detailing the distilling process behind these liquors, you can fill an afternoon with cocktail masterclasses and bespoke gin blending classes. Distillery tours are available from Monday to Saturday between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm. No bookings are required!

Stone & Wood Brewery, Byron Bay
Another Byron Bay icon is the famed handcrafted beer brewery Stone & Wood. Since moving a large portion of brewing operations to Murwillumbah in 2014, the Byron Bay premises has been used for brewing limited releases, but tours are still extremely popular. Tours cover the history of the popular beer, the brewing process itself and wraps up at the tasting room, where paddles of freshly brewed frothies are available to sample. As of early August, some brewing tanks are being transported to Stone & Wood’s new brewing site, but tours are still running at the Boronia Place location until later in the year. Tours are available twice a day on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, and then increase to thrice daily on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Book here.
