Champagne and shopping – say ciao to Modo Mio at Pacific Fair Shopping Centre
There was once a time when shopping centre dining meant choosing between major fast-food retailers in a food court. Thankfully, those days are long behind us with shopping centres now creating culinary hubs and luring top-notch eateries. The latest to embrace the shifting trend are none other than seasoned hospitality operators Max and Amanda Alfieri, who have owned restaurants at Sanctuary Cove and across the Gold Coast for many years. If you’re a Pacific Fair regular with a penchant for pizza, pasta and prosecco, pull up a seat at Modo Mio, which has opened on the ground level of The Resort.
While a shopping centre environment might not seem like an obvious choice for an upscale Italian eatery, that’s precisely what attracted hospitality operators Max and Amanda to the space. Max explains, “As seasoned travellers, we’ve visited some of the most iconic shopping destinations around the world, including Century City in Los Angeles and Marina Sands in Singapore. We were inspired to bring that same level of sophistication and style to the Gold Coast. Pacific Fair Shopping Centre is already one of the most prominent and renowned international shopping and dining destinations in Australia, but we are committed to taking it to the next level and creating an unparalleled dining experience for our customers.” Last week, shoppers got their first taste of the eagerly anticipated dining experience as Modo Mio softly opened its doors.
In terms of the menu, Amanda says it’s a culmination of favourites from their 28 years in hospitality. Think modern twists on classic Italian cuisine. “At Modo Mio, traditional Italian cuisine is reimagined, and our menu blends classic Italian cooking methods with innovative flavours, seamlessly blending the past with the present,” Max says. The extensive menu opens with a selection of crisp pizza breads including the ever-popular pizza Bianca (thin base brushed with extra-virgin olive oil, rosemary and sea salt). The pizza at Modo Mio is described as traditional Neapolitan style, where Max is from, with handmade dough. Those who prefer to pick at a selection of snacks will find the Primo Piatto section particularly enticing with the chef’s duo pate, which Amanda describes as ‘divine’, followed by crisp zucchini flowers and, her personal favourite, the panzarotti di patate (crumbed potato croquettes with salami, ham, mozzarella, parmesan and a gorgonzola cream dipping sauce). The pasta is Max’s domain with more than a dozen different combinations ranging from the popular linguine primavera loaded with local king prawns, sliced zucchini and cherry tomatoes to the rich and decadent pappardelle ossobuco. Rounding out the culinary offering is a selection of mains including a classic parmigiana alongside the pollo con gamberi (Barossa chicken topped with king prawns and avocado finished in a garlic-brandy sauce). Be sure to save room for the dessert, which Amanda has been perfecting for almost 30 years. For us, it’s a toss up between the classic tiramisu and the sticky-toffee pudding, but there’s also an affogato for those who fancy a little pep for more shopping. Modo Mio brings Max and Amanda’s passion for great food and ambience to life in a stunning marble-filled setting that provides the perfect backdrop for dining, drinking and making a day (and night) out of your shopping expeditions. The alfresco dining section is due to open in coming weeks.
