Sydney’s Milky Lane brings next-level burgers, sweet cocktails and hip-hop tunes to Surfers Paradise

Those who have been waiting with bated breath to get a taste of Sydney’s wildly popular Milky Lane burgers can now exhale a sigh of relief – the famed burger joint’s first Queensland venue will officially open its doors in Surfers Paradise this Friday May 18. We snuck in a few days early to bring you all of the juicy details, but this one comes with a graphic content warning. If you scroll down, you’re going to see some oozing, cheesy and super-hot burger porn that is most definitely NSFW – unless your boss is, well, into saucy things … we know ours is.

The details
Milky Lane first opened in Bondi in 2016, with sibling venues in Cronulla and Parramatta following soon after as burger fiends quickly developed an obsession with its mind-boggling burgers, eclectic fit-outs and blasting hip-hop tunes. Now it’s our turn with the fellas behind Milky Lane choosing Surfers Paradise as the home of their first venue outside of Sydney. Think drool-inducing American-style burgers, devilishly sweet cocktails, ice-cold tap beers, loaded shakes and plenty of diet-busting sides and desserts.

The space
While it’s tucked away in the western end of Cavill Avenue (neighbouring Sandwich Bros, just up from Melba’s) you certainly won’t miss Milky Lane – you’ll either see the colourful neon exterior from afar, hear the old-school Tupac beats booming, or get a mesmerising whiff of sizzling wagyu beef patties blanketed in American cheese from streets away. The fun graffiti-doused interior, highlighted by hand-painted portraits of all of the hip-hop greats from Drake to Snoop and Biggie Smalls, combined with its energetic vibe and killer playlists, places Milky Lane somewhere in between a burger bar and a hip-hop nightclub.

The food
While Milky Lane’s Instagram feed is enough to get your palms sweaty, seeing these bad boys in the flesh will instantly get your heart pumping and have you reaching for the wet wipes. If you appreciate a simple American-style burger, then the Milky Lane is a good place to start – a wagyu beef pattie, high-melt cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles, house ketchup and special sauce. Shake up your tastebuds with the Limp Brisket burger, brimming with Texan-style smoked beef brisket with American cheese, onion rings, sauerkraut and pickle slaw, Thousand Island dressing, mustard and a house bourbon-barbecue sauce. If you’ve got it in you, then get your mouth around the Kevin Bacon burger with double beef, double maple bacon, double cheese, barbecue sauce, mustard, special sauce, caramelised onion and pickles. The Drake burger, with a black bean, lentil and sweet potato patty, grilled portobello mushrooms, truffle aioli and all the trimmings, will look after the less-carnivorous folk, and there are plenty of sweet finishers for all – the fried churro bowl with salted-caramel ice-cream won’t disappoint. As for the booze, you’ll find a vibrant spread of milky cocktails, a tight selection of wines and a range of tap and bottled beers – or you can splash out and get a nip of rum in your chocolate thickshake.
