Madocke Beer Brewing Company brings Belgian brews to Ashmore

The local brewing scene on the Gold Coast is thriving, thanks in part to the introduction of the state’s artisan liquor licence in 2020, but also our penchant for sipping from the source. While the majority of commercial brewers focus their attention towards American-style beers, Madocke Brewing Company is going against the grain to produce Belgian ales. Belgian-born, coast-crafted – Madocke Beer Brewing Company opened the doors to a sizeable new brewery and taproom on Southport Nerang Road in Ashmore last weekend (Saturday October 30). Here’s everything you need to know about this impressive newcomer …

When Annelies Nijskens and Jimmy Van Eetvelde made the decision to move to Australia, the pair decided to use the opportunity to start fresh and follow their passions. Instead of pursuing careers in industrial air conditioning (which they had done back in their hometown of Flanders, Belgium), the couple opted to indulge their love of brewing and drinking beer. Having dabbled in home-brewing in the past, Annelies and Jimmy already understood the basics. However, the couple figured that if they were really going to give it a crack, they needed to up-skill by enrolling in brew school in Belgium. Fast-forward three years and the studious couple had converted their two-car garage in Pacific Pines into a basic three-vessel brewing system that was capable of producing 10,000 L of Belgian beer per year and were competing in brewing comps alongside some of the major players in the craft-beer scene. After their at-home tastings became a little too popular for a home-based business, Annelies and Jimmy were faced with a decision – expand or scale down. Frothy fiends, they chose the former and they’ve just unveiled Madocke Beer Brewing Company’s brand-new headquarters in Ashmore.

Spanning 615 sqm, Madocke Beer Brewing Company is the kind of place you can stop by on your way home from work as well as bring the whole family on the weekend. Stella, the venue’s resident basset hound, will likely be sprawled out on the astroturfed deck that is lined with picnic tables. Inside, there’s a scattering of high tables that turn your attention towards the bar, which features no less than ten shiny taps – seven of which are dedicated to Madocke’s own brews. The remaining three will showcase a selection of craft sips from across the Gold Coast as well as a cider on tap. A far cry from the brand’s humble garage set-up, Madocke features some pretty impressive brewing equipment, which has increased Annelies and Jimmy’s output from 10,000 to 180,000 L per year, with room to expand. Non-beer drinkers aren’t forgotten – there’s a succinct selection of Queensland wines as well as a cocktail list in the works. A rotating roster of food trucks will roll in from Friday through to Sunday and the venue is dog friendly, so you can bring the whole kit and cavoodle.
