Pavement Whispers: Melbourne’s lauded Lune Croissanterie announces Brisbane expansion
Whenever we spend time in Melbourne, our itinerary always features a visit (or several) to Lune Croissanterie’s jaw-dropping Fitzroy production facility and bakery. Now, the world-renowned pastry maker is heading to the Sunshine State, announcing the mid-2021 opening of a Brisbane-based locale in South Brisbane. Here’s what we know …
We’re firm believers that art can be found anywhere and in any thing – Lune Croissanterie’s picture-perfect pastries are evidence of this. The Melbourne-born croissanterie is famed for its meticulous attention to detail and pinpoint execution, ensuring every morsel that emerges from its architecturally stunning production kitchen is damn-near flawless – a kind of technical elegance that could be attributed to Lune founder Kate Reid’s previous career as a Formula 1 aerodynamicist. Whatever the secret, Lune’s worldwide recognition has meant that any word of its coveted croissants becoming available outside of Melbourne is big (let us emphasise – very big) news. Well, hold on to your hats Brisbane – Lune Croissanterie is coming, with a full-scale production facility and shopfront set to open in Fish Lane in winter 2021.
The team first revealed that Lune would be making the trip north in an announcement posted to its Instagram page on Thursday December 10 (which already has more than 5000 likes and nearly 1000 comments). When we reached out to Kate Reid to get some more details, she informed us that co-director Nathan Toleman (a cafe entrepreneur who has been a part of the Lune team since 2014) had initially been discussing the idea of opening a Brisbane concept with Fish Lane developers Aria Property Group earlier this year. When Lune’s anticipated Sydney expansion was pushed back due to some unfortunate pandemic-induced delays, Nathan pitched the prospect of bringing Lune to Brisbane to Kate and her brother, fellow co-director Cameron Reid. The trio elected to capitalise on the window of opportunity, snagging a sizeable space with a footprint comparable to that of its hugely popular Fitzroy home. Exact details of the build (tentatively set to begin in March) are being kept close to the chest, but Kate revealed that they are working with local architecture firm Hogg & Lamb on the design, which will boast an aesthetic unique to Brisbane, but will still offer the same kind of jaw-dropping wonder as its moody Melbourne sibling. As for the product range, expect an identical menu to Melbourne as well as a rotating selection of monthly specials – crafted on an alternating basis by Melbourne and Brisbane teams (so expect some quintessentially Queensland ingredients to feature).
Lune Croissanterie’s Brisbane outpost will arrive in mid-2021. Stay tuned for more info as it is revealed to us!
