Lord of the Fries brings meat-free fast food to the heart of Surfers Paradise

If you live the vegetarian or vegan lifestyle, then burger joints are probably not your favourite place to hang out and feast. Well, the game has officially changed. After months of anticipation, ethical and meat-free fast-food institution Lord of the Fries has this week opened its first Queensland store in the heart of Surfers Paradise. If you thought burgers, hot dogs, wings and nuggets were just for the carnivores, think again.

When we first dropped this meat-free news back in July, all of you (vego or not) went bonkers – and rightly so. After starting out as a travelling food truck in 2004, Lord of the Fries opened its first venue in Melbourne back in late 2005 and has since swirled up a hefty cult-like following with its wholesome ethos of creating food ‘made with love, not animals’. As the name suggests, the Lord of the Fries concept was originally born out of a love of fries, with founders Mandy and Mark Koronczyk setting out to offer an alternative solution to a market they believed was full of chemical and beef tallow-laden hot chips. Plenty of ethical foodies have jumped on board, fuelling this vegetarian and vegan fast-food joint to open a swag of stores throughout the southern states and even over the ditch, bro.

So, fries are life here. You can choose from classic, chunky, shoestring or sweet potato, though the offering goes well beyond golden potatoes. If you love a cheeseburger, minus the cow, then the Lord of the Fries version comes pretty darn close to the real meaty deal. The veggie patty is topped with cheese, lettuce, onion, tangy pickle, a decent schmear of Belgian mayo, plus mustard and ketchup. There are a bunch of vegetarian burgers and hot dogs across the menu, plus tasty sides like onion rings, ‘chick’n’ wings, vegetarian nuggets (we love a good nug) and ‘phish’ and chips, with everything offered with gluten-free and vegan alternatives. Oh, and there’s also cold, creamy vegan milkshakes to wash it all down with. We’re pretty sure this meat-free burger joint makes even the most carnivorous among us drool.
