Inside Loki – the new two-level Mediterranean eatery and bar taking Hellenika’s Nobby Beach spot
While the Gold Coast is still digesting the news that iconic Greek restaurant Hellenika has sold and closed its doors, the new owners have wasted no time in getting the site’s successor up and running. The double-storey Nobby Beach venue is now home to Loki (pronounced lock-ee), a new Mediterranean-style restaurant and rooftop bar that’s soaked in European summer vibes.
Loki has come to life at the hands of the same team that own Burleigh institution Justin Lane and is shaped around the motto of ‘drinking, dining and dancing’. The new owners have retained the culinary prowess of Hellenika’s former head chef Justin Pries, who is overseeing Loki’s share-style menu, which is designed to deliver a fresh and versatile Mediterranean offering for locals. Covering the land and sea, Loki’s menu features a mixture of smaller bites and larger share plates – think saganaki and fried whitebait as snacks, and slow-roasted lamb shoulder, grilled octopus, whole charcoal-grilled chicken, and fresh pastas for the main event. Chasing the food menu is a huge selection of cocktails, a raft of wines (which you’ll see on display in the floor-to-ceiling cellars), tap beers and spirits.
While the bones and overall aesthetic of the recently revamped ex-Hellenika premises have remained unchanged, splashes of artwork and colour give the iconic venue a new identity. Downstairs is being kept as the main dining room – a relaxed and intimate space with group tables and views through to the open kitchen. You can also dine with the same food menu upstairs on the open-air rooftop, though an upbeat bar vibe kicks in after dark, with DJs and live music to set the scene for cocktail-sipping revellers.
Loki is now open for dinner seven days, with a lunch service from Friday to Sunday. For opening hours, contact details and social handles, head to our Stumble Guide.
