Lester & Earl brings American barbecue to Palm Beach
Palm Beach can now add American-style barbecue to its culinary offering following the opening of Lester & Earl on the Gold Coast Highway. The venue, named after two members of an American bluegrass band from the 1940s, has been more than one year in the making.
An inconspicuous doorway between a bike shop and The Sunlounge Collection transports you through to America’s deep south circa 1950. A gigantic mural of the Marlboro Man greets you from the far wall, a nod to the era, while Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash resonate throughout the expansive establishment. A slightly smoky aroma wafts through from the kitchen offering the first sensory taste of the goods.
Behind the upcycled barrel bar, there are a dozen craft beers to wet your whistle alongside The West Winds gin from Western Australia and Tequila Tromba but it’s the bacon-infused vodka that has people excited. The fare is hearty and classic however before you go thinking this is your typical American eatery, the owners have upped the ante and only use top quality Australian produce, the grass-fed meat is slow-cooked and smoked daily by the resident pit-masters, even the side salads at Lester & Earl are designed to enhance the experience. Pick at some Pulled Pork Cheesy Fries, a side serving of smoked Mac ‘n’ Cheese or the Jalapeno Poppers that are stuffed with chorizo and two types of cheese, wrapped in bacon, dusted with barbecue rub and smoked as starters. As for the main affair, tuck into an enormous barbecue platter that is filled with beautifully tender brisket, honey mustard potato salad, tangy coleslaw, cornbread and a pickle or indulge in the Buttermilk Fried Chicken that more than makes up for any additional gym sessions you will need to do to make up for it. If burgers are your kryptonite, Lester & Earl’s range of stacked stacks will have you weak at the knees. Finish your feast with some bacon ice-cream or a piece of pecan pie.
The venue itself is an amalgamation of five previously separate units which gives it a sizeable floor space and verandah that wraps around the perimeter providing the perfect setting to enjoy a bite and a casual afternoon beverage overlooking the beach. Inside, the rustic decor is deliberately rough but with a touch of sophistication. See our Stumble Guide for opening times.
