Piccolos and breakfast gnocchi – The LeanChef Kitchn arrives on Chevron Island

It’s been some time since the Chevron Island precinct has welcomed a newcomer to the cafe scene. On Wednesday (September 12) the doors to The LeanChef Kitchn swung open – armed with organic coffee and a menu that balances healthy options with tempting classics, it’s set to breathe new life into the Thomas Drive strip.

The prominent corner site at the top of Thomas Drive, which formerly housed the longstanding Lime Cafe, was completely gutted and reconfigured to make way for The LeanChef Kitchn. The new daytime eatery is the handiwork of ex-Melbourne restaurateur and chef Enzo Loterzo, who set out to create a wholesome eatery that catered for all tastes and diets with a vibrant breakfast and lunch offering. Conscious eaters will find a series of gluten-free, organic and vegan options on the menu, with moreish classics (we’re looking at you, buttery croque monsieur) dotted throughout to keep the balance.

For breakfast, think sweet-corn fitters with grilled miso-maple pumpkin and buttermilk dressing, a paleo bowl brimming with charred asparagus, purple cauliflower, field mushrooms and kale chips, and an intriguing semolina breakfast gnocchi with scrambled eggs, bacon and fetta. Once midday swings around, you’ll notice a slight Italian twist. While you’ll still find go-to dishes like a classic cheeseburger with grass-fed Cape Grim beef alongside colourful salads and open sandwiches, expect Italian-style hints from dishes like the organic and gluten-free linguine with swimmer crab and chilli, and the Sicilian-style charred panino with prosciutto, olive paste and pickled red onion. Oh, and there’s dedicated dog parking – so BYO pooch.

The LeanChef Kitchn is now open – you’ll find opening hours and contact details over in our Stumble Guide.
