Organic coffee roaster Joy Beans opens a ‘brew bar’ and vegan ice-creamery in Burleigh Heads
Coffee connoisseurs, toast lovers and appreciators of all things raw and vegan – there’s a new ‘brew bar’ in town that’s going to knock your socks off with coolness. Wholesale coffee company Joy Beans has officially opened the doors to its first retail coffee space, serving organic coffee, raw treats, organic spelt toast, delicious vegan ice-cream and a rad range of alternative brewing wares.
Owners Patty and Ben Glennon have been operating Joy Beans as a wholesale organic fair-trade coffee roaster for more than four years, before recently branching out to establish the brand’s very first retail space. Whilst the new caffeine hub is designed showcase Joy Beans’ own single-origin and specialty blends, Patty and Ben have set out to create a venue that proves that specialty coffee can be done well with ‘organic’ beans. In a nutshell, organic coffee sometimes gets a bit of a bad rap compared to its non-organic counterparts, so we’re pretty delighted to see places like Joy Beans dispel this way of thinking, one brew at a time. Located on Lower West Burleigh Road, the new brew bar is bright, white and refined, with light timber wares and one killer all-white La Marzocco coffee machine pumping out the good stuff. By morning, you can think of Joy Beans as a ‘coffee and toast’ bar, then as the day progresses, the focus swings to coffee and vegan ice-cream – both incredibly delicious combinations.
Okay, let’s get back on the toast topic – you should know that the Joy Beans crew take their toast just as seriously as the coffee. You’ll choose from white spelt, wholemeal spelt and walnut, gluten-free chia bread and a spelt fruit loaf – each slice comes 2cm thick and, for those a little pedantic about their toast, you’re given the option of whether you want it toasted light, medium or dark (oh, the freedom!). There’s fancy organic butter, vegan butter and more spreads than you can poke a stick (or knife) at, including a to-die-for vegan chocolate and hazelnut spread, plus organic peanut and almond butters, a fig spread and various organic jams. Over the coming weeks, ‘fancy toast’ will be introduced, with toppings like goats cheese and blueberries. If you’re looking to indulge your sweet tooth, then you’ll want to get your mitts around a vegan ice-cream sandwich with organic handmade cookies, or treat yo’self to one of seven flavours scooped into an organic waffle cone. If you can’t decide between coffee and ice-cream, get yourself a vegan affogato topped with a shot of Joy Beans’ own liquid gold. Oh, by the way – it’s time to ditch the coin purse, because Joy Beans is completely cashless.
