Get your bacon fix this International Bacon Day
For carnivores, bacon is undoubtedly one of life’s true joys. The aroma, the pop and sizzle of it cooking in its own grease to that deeply satisfying crunch and the subsequent flavour explosion, bacon is like a high-five for your mouth. This Saturday September 5 is International Bacon Day so to celebrate this wonderful, momentous occasion, we’ve round-up a few of the city’s best bacon-filled delights for your eating pleasure. You’re welcome.
While there is some conjecture on the actual date of International Bacon Day, Wikipedia professes that the porky tribute day is held on the Saturday before Labor Day in the United States so that’s good enough for us (let’s be honest, any excuse to eat bacon is alright by us). Get your weekend off to a stellar start and slurp on a bacon-infused bloody Mary from Elston in Surfers Paradise. The delicious, salty marvel features bacon-infused vodka, lemon Worcester, pepper and tomato juice. If you can’t quite get your head around vodka for breakfast, pop over to Elk Espresso for one of its famous Elvis thickshakes; a decadent concoction of peanut butter, banana, maple syrup and topped with crispy bacon. Afterwards, if you’re in need of something a little more substantial, there are loads of cafes that can indulge your love affair with everybody’s favourite pork product. Burleigh Social and nearby The Paddock Bakery do a mean bacon and egg burger that doesn’t skimp on the good stuff while Larder Burleigh Waters and its sister venue Griffith St Larder dish up a hefty slab of thick-cut bacon from beautiful Byron Bay. The Alfred’s Burrito at Alfred’s Diner is loaded with bacon and if you’re really keen, you can double down on the bacon for an extra $3.50. Money well spent if you ask us. Speaking of double, Ze Pickle does a magnificent Double Double burger that contains two hand-pressed wagyu beef patties, double jack cheese and double maple smoked bacon, you can add health for an extra $2, if you’re into that kind of thing. Make a pit stop on your bacon-filled journey to Pigs and Pints in Surfers Paradise for a Pig N Cider cocktail. The delightful swill contains house-made bacon-washed vodka, ginger liqueur, lemon, chamomile tea syrup and finished with a dash of apple cider. Finish your feast at Lester & Earl in Palm Beach. The American-inspired establishment wholeheartedly believes in the premise that everything is better with bacon and offers bacon-infused vodka, jalapeno poppers that are stuffed with chorizo and two types of cheese and wrapped in bacon, and even bacon ice-cream.
If you’re feeling adventurous, pick up some quality bacon from your local butcher and have a crack at the Fool’s Gold Mandwich, but be warned, it’s a beast subject to its own laws and one that may leave you gasping for breath, wiping condiments from your chin and sitting out your next meal. Bringing together three of our favourite things, bread, chocolate and bacon, this Chocolate Bacon Damper is a worthy feast for your Bacon Day celebrations but for the true bacon lover, you haven’t tried amazing bacon until you’ve made your own courtesy of BaconSmith’s brilliant DIY bacon kit.
