Burleigh Waters and Varsity Lakes residents, rejoice! There’s a tasty new local that is bringing homemade goodness to your hood. If you like your hollandaise sauce made from scratch, have an obsession with haloumi (we’ll put our hands up there) and get your jollies out of the smell of fresh-baked sweets, then consider Home Plate Kitchen your new neighbourhood hang.

We’re all for home-style nosh. It’s the epitome of ‘keeping it real’. Whilst the doors opened just a few short weeks ago, you’d swear that Home Plate Kitchen had been there for years – it just has that vibe. The former fish and chip joint on Treeview Drive has been transformed by Sydney natives Jess Kaimoana and Shayne Green, shining a tasty light on the busy residential pocket. If you live on, near or around Mattocks Road, you’ll back us up when we say this is a welcome addition to the area. The space is now a far cry from its former state – the two-week reno saw the space re-emerge as a bright, open and welcoming eating house and caffeine stop, much to the delight of locals.

The duo have developed an extensive breakfast and lunch menu, which takes a real shine to home-style eats. We’ll use the humble beef burgers as an example – the patty is made in-house, so is the chunky relish, and it’s served on a good crunchy bakery-fresh bread roll, instead of the token shiny brioche burger bun. Not that we have anything against brioche (we love you, brioche) but it’s certainly refreshing to see an old-school hearty burger done well … and yes, it comes with pickles. By morning, you can build your own breakfast, tuck into corn fritters with ‘guacahummus’, savour a fresh acai bowl, or get your mitts around the veggie stack with a hash brown, caramelised onions, and a poached egg topped with a thick slice of haloumi. The cabinet it chock-full with housemade baked treats, including a simple yet life-changing chocolate brownie. Home Plate Kitchen is the only place on the Gold Coast where you’ll find Sydney-based Mutch & More Coffee pouring – so if you’re after an on-the-go brew and bacon and egg roll before work, or you’re keen to sit, savour and stay a while, both you and your stomach will feel most content in the Burleigh backstreets’ newest cafe space.
