Welcome Home – a new cafe in Currumbin serving up comfort food and community spirit

Currumbin, like much of the Gold Coast, has undergone quite the transformation over the past decade or two. Sure, the beach has always been the star attraction, but back in the day, if you were hungry, your best bet was the fish and chip shop. Fast forward to today, and there’s standout eateries on every corner. One of the latest to emerge is a place that feels extra special because its owners are all Currumbin locals, born and bred. Step inside, and it’s not just a cafe, it’s like coming home.

When the chance to take over Portside Coffee in Currumbin Waters popped up, Sam Chilcott and Wade Brenchley didn’t exactly jump at the opportunity. Running the Currumbin Alley Surf School is a breeze for them, but jumping into the cafe game with no hospitality experience? It felt like a stretch. Still, the idea kept pulling at Sam, and as fate would have it, his mate Nic Philip – a chef with serious culinary chops – offered to join the team. With that, the decision became crystal clear.

Nestled in the heart of Currumbin Waters, Home is a cafe with a unique story, blending surf culture and community spirit. What began as a crazy idea between lifelong friends, has blossomed into a thriving hub for both visitors and those who call Currumbin home, which is where the name comes from.

Sam said, “We wanted a name that meant something to us and Home just makes sense. Currumbin is where we grew up and we want this place to feel like home for the people who come in here.”

Nic, who has spent 14 years working abroad and running his own restaurant, The Bakers Bistro, in Bali, also felt the name resonated with him. “It felt good to say that I was going home to make Home.”

That homely environment begins with the coffee. Locals including Sam, Wade and Nic had grown to love the ST. ALi coffee served at Portside, so it was important to keep the brew that the customers know and love.

The building itself though has undergone an incredible floor-to-ceiling transformation, creating a warm, familiar atmosphere with a seamless flow between the kitchen and dining areas. Open for breakfast and lunch seven days a week, Home features a dedicated takeaway counter out in the sun-kissed courtyard, which opens from 5:30 am on weekdays and 6:30 am on weekends.

Home’s menu, carefully curated by Nic, features simple yet flavourful dishes, focusing on fresh, local ingredients. Everything on the menu is homemade, from the baked goods to the sambal, with the cafe striking a balance between quick, grab-and-go meals and leisurely brunch experiences. Home offers breakfast favourites, whilst bringing some exciting new flavours and techniques to the fold. The go-to avocado toast has been levelled-up with charred red peppers and sesame sambal. The humble potato hash hits the high notes with walnut parmesan and a romesco sauce made in-house. For the sweet tooth, the French toast has been soaked overnight, and is served with dark chocolate cremeaux, chocolate hazelnut crumble and raspberry semifreddo. It’s comfort food that keeps you coming back for more.

But what truly sets Home apart is its deep connection to the Currumbin community. Wade said, “Home is a place where you can come straight from the beach, have a relaxed meal with mates and feel like you belong here.”
