The round-up: morning munchies – top spots for a healthy breakfast on the Gold Coast

It’s been drilled into us since we were little tackers – breakfast is the most important meal of the day. If you often wake up with the best intentions of having a super-healthy breakfast and get easily swayed by your flatmate’s blueberry Pop-Tarts (which contain questionable amounts of actual blueberries) or you just can’t resist the hash browns and hollandaise at your local, then you’d better keep reading. In the spirit of the annual summer shed, here are some of the best places on the Gold Coast for a healthy breakfast.

BSKT: If you’re partial to an eggs benny but also want a summer bod, then you’ll want to get yourself acquainted with the BSKT Healthy Benny. It comes with free-range poached eggs, grilled ham, spinach and toast – all lovingly drizzled with tasty Kalenaise. That’s just the tip – there are plenty of healthy, gluten-free, vegetarian and high-protein options here, so you won’t be tempted by any grease-laden baddies … leave room for a CocoWhip.

Caffe Republic: Whether you’re paleo, ketogenic, vegetarian, love meat or just flat-out give a damn about what you put in your mouth, then Caffe Republic is your one-stop shop. For breakfast, you’ll find everything from scrambled eggs with curried-kale sauerkraut, bacon, avocado and seed toast, to smoothie bowls and coconut tortillas with pulled pork. Wash it all down with a cold-pressed juice or a cold-brew coffee.

Grocer & Grind: Eating healthy doesn’t mean you have to deprive yourself of the good things in life … like pancakes. This wildly popular superfood cafe serves healthy breakfasts on the daily – if you haven’t tried the gluten-free and dairy-free banana protein pancakes with salted caramel coconut ice-cream and summer fruits, then you need to rectify this situation immediately.

Meraki Wholefood Kitchen: This Chirn Park gem is full of quality food that is wholesome, hearty and ticks all the boxes for even the most health-conscious among us. If you’ve got an appetite, keep it lean with big breakky, or you can start your morning on a (healthy) sweet note with protein pancakes or a delicious ice-cold smoothie bowl topped with fruit, granola and lots of goodness.

Marie Anita’s: Well known for its gluten-free and sugar-free fare, Marie Anita’s is a surefire option for a healthy breakfast. Whether you’re into raw, vegan, paleo, gluten free, free range or just want to eat green and organic, then the extensive breakfast menu will keep you more than satisfied. Keep it light with dippy eggs with sorghum toast or go for the leafy option with the organic breakfast salad topped with sustainable smoked salmon.

Sozo Square: For the healthy eaters on the southern end, a trip to Sozo Square is a no brainer. This vegan eatery keeps its all-day breakfasts bright and colourful, with everything from giant smoothie bowls to spiced scrambled tofu and the prettiest darn vegan pancakes you ever did see.

Blendlove: Take a deep breath – healthy hash browns exist (hurrah!). Blendlove’s Happy Hashies, made with housemade truffle hash, garden greens, ‘kale-naise’, coconut ‘bakon’ avocado is pretty well life changing. There’s also healthy French toast, pancakes and a big breakky (featuring pulled ‘pawk’) on the mouth-watering morning menu. If you haven’t been here, then hot-foot it to Southport if you know what’s good for you.

Real Food Kitchen: The kitchen here is completely free from gluten and refined sugar, so you’re sure to get a hearty day-starter that will keep your plans for a summer bod on track. The Super Green Raw Vegan Bowl with broccoli, cauliflower, spinach and avocado topped with tahini dressing, nuts and seeds is probably the most healthy breakfast you’ll (ever) eat.

Cardamom Pod: These pretty plant-based eats are as much of a treat for your eyes as they are your mouth. With venues in Southport and Broadbeach, you’ll never be far from a feast at the pod. Hot tip – the smoothie bowls here will blow your sweet little mind (save a few seconds for a sneaky Instagram post before you tuck in).

Sera Bar: If you’re vegetarian, vegan, or an all-round foodie with an appreciation for meat-free goodness, then Sera Bar breakfasts will be your go-to. Located in Burleigh Heads, this vegan eatery whips up everything from colourful smoothie bowls and chia trifles to a vegan eggs benny and eye-popping buckwheat pancakes.

Raw Energy: The Coolangatta and Burleigh venues pump out some seriously tasty morning nosh, like vegan fritters with quinoa, sweet potato and kale, giant bowls of fruit-topped muesli and an endless selection of power-packed smoothies.
