The round-up: enjoy a fancy feast in isolation from these hatted restaurants and fine-dining favourites

While there has been immeasurable impact on the hospitality industry in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, we’re seeing true displays of resilience from the Gold Coast restaurants and cafes that are staying open to safely serve take-home food to locals. Though, for fine-dining, hatted and higher-end restaurants, survival in this new world of takeaway-only service has required more than quick side-steps and adaptations – to stay open, a monumental overhaul of how they do things was in order. Thankfully, it’s a move that many have been able to pull off. While their white tablecloths, set menus and wine pairings have been subbed out for biodegradable containers and tins of beer, these former fine-diners are still open and preparing the goods – it’s just a little different. Looking for a break from pizza and burgers? Here’s a taste of what’s on offer …

Restaurant Labart, Burleigh Heads
Initially, the hatted Burleigh Heads restaurant lead the charge and called it early, launching its Labart at Home concept before the takeaway-only restrictions were imposed, as a precautionary measure to do their bit in the fight against coronavirus – and it’s a move that has been very well received by locals. Each Sunday, the Labart at Home menu is released, detailing a different dish from Wednesday through to Sunday. The menu takes a step away from its popular dine-in dishes (oh how we miss you, butter-soaked barbecued king prawns) to give us hearty, comforting alternatives like Alex’s mum’s chicken soup, old-school lasagne, quail coq au vin and seafood curry with raita. There are also rotating desserts and sides like bake-at-home garlic bread – plus, there’s a full line-up of wines to choose from when you pick it up. Labart has also teamed up with Gold Coast BMW for a two-car fleet of delivery vehicles, so those that live close can opt to have their feasts delivered via luxury wheels. Scoot to the Labart website to place your order.

The North Room, Mermaid Beach
Owners Tim and Shannon Stewart have transformed their casual fine diner into a pick-up point for weekly meals and bottles of wine. The duo started off with bento boxes featuring the restaurant’s favourite dishes, and are continue shaking up its weekly offering. In the week beginning April 20, The North Room will be serving fancy jacket potatoes! The humble spud will be topped with The North Room favourites like deboned chicken wings, beef and pickles, and roast pork and beans. Plus, there will be a vego option. The jacket potatoes will be available Thursday to Saturday from 5:00–6:30 pm, with orders open from Sunday April 19 via the website. Yum and fun!

Rick Shores, Burleigh Heads
If you thought Rick Shores’ iconic bug rolls would be taken away from us (you know, along with our ability to live a normal life), then think again! You can absolutely devour a bug roll – and even a gluten-free one, if you’re that way inclined – in the comfort of your own home. While we can’t soak up the dreamy beach views, we can still enjoy the best of Rick Shores’ food, with its Tuk Shop offering now in full swing. The menu, which you can view here, features favourites like the karaage chicken with gochujang, the Isaan-style hotdog with pickled ginger and mustard, curries like poached-chicken massaman with braised potatoes and crispy chicken skin, punchy Asian salads, and desserts like doughnuts with roasted-rice ice-cream. When you’re ordering, you can also select from different wine-pairing options and the Rick Shores sommelier will write up some personal wine-tasting notes for you!  It’s going to be a good day when we can finally enjoy the food and the view at Rick Shores again. Until then, get your fix via the Tuk Shop online.

Social Eating House and Orzo, Oracle Boulevard, Broadbeach
Chef Matthew Jefferson and wife Dayna, the owners of the awarded Broadbeach institution Social Eating House, only opened the doors to contemporary Italian dining space Orzo in late 2019. The duo have managed to keep their popular restaurants, both located in the Oracle Boulevard precinct, in operation to ensure locals can still enjoy their favourite meals from both venues. At Social, there are dishes like succulent lamb shoulder (slow cooked in yoghurt for 12 hours) with cabbage slaw and chats, chargrilled chicken with jus, sage and seasonal greens, and desserts like panna cotta with orange-blossom jelly on offer. While over at Orzo, you can enjoy fresh burrata, an Italian salad of greens, fennel, kohlrabi and montasio, pork-and-beef ragu lasagne, and take-home handmade pastas (like casarecce and fusilli) for you to cook at home. Plus, Oracle Broadbeach also has its own pop-up drive-through concept so you can access this deliciousness without having to leave your car! For menus and ordering, head here.

Etsu Izakaya, Mermaid Beach
While Etsu’s dim, cavernous interior is out of bounds for now, its mouth-watering Japanese menu has been revamped so you can savour every bite from the comfort and safety of your home. Enjoy delicate sashimi arrangements, smaller plates like kingfish with yuzu soy and fresh jalapeno, made-to-order sushi rolls, housemade gyoza with chilli-soy dip, and dishes like beef-cheek katsu with seasonal tempura vegetables in a dashi broth. You can still order Etsu favourites like the 72-hour-marinated black-miso cod with seasonal pickles, wild barramundi in a shio koji marinade, and high-score wagyu striploin with a soy-mirin broth. See? Isolation isn’t so bad after all! Check out the new takeaway menu online and enjoy the best of Etsu at home.

Mamasan Kitchen + Bar, Broadbeach
Luckily, you can still enjoy a bunch of Mamasan’s most popular dishes with its new Take Mama Home menu. Work your chopsticks through favourites like spanner-crab ‘ravioli’ dumplings with water chestnut and a coconut sambal bisque, hot-and-sweet eggplant with fried green beans, cabbage and sticky chilli sauce, and the crispy Korean fried chicken with a parmesan and almond snow. Then, drop the chopsticks and wrap your mitts around Mama’s fluffy bao buns, filled with delicious things like pulled wagyu beef with pickled green mustard and soft-shell crab with tartare sauce. Can’t decide? Mama’s ever-popular banquets are still on the table – just order ahead here, arrange to pick it up from the Oracle Boulevard drive-through and let the Mamasan team do the rest.
