The round-up: where to find the best bánh mì on the Gold Coast

Banh mi, oh how we love thee. These French-influenced Vietnamese baguettes, which foodies have been swooning over for some time now, are jammed with flavour and texture. For the uninitiated, banh mi rolls feature a few delicious elements – a soft-yet-slightly-crunchy baguette that is lathered with mayonnaise and French pate, then (traditionally) filled with crispy pork, crunchy pickled vegetables, sprigs of coriander and a sprinkle of fresh chilli. Whether you’re a banh mi muncher from way back or you’re just getting on the bandwagon (welcome, friend), then let us enlighten you with some top spots to find delicious banh mi rolls on the Gold Coast.

Miami Hot Bread, Miami: There’s a reason this unassuming bakery often has a line out the door at lunchtime – the cracking bahn mi it serves up daily has quickly become a cult favourite. Whether you choose the caramelised pork belly (our fave), lemongrass beef, chicken or the tofu roll served with all the traditional trimmings, only the freshest bread is to be expected – it’s all in the name.

My Saigon Tuckshop, Burleigh Waters: This Burleigh Heads smoko joint is a true hidden gem. It’s open on weekdays and only for a few hours a day to capture the local workers – expect to be met with a line up, but the popular – and very affordable – meals are pumped out lightning fast. You’ll find grab-and-go banh mi filled with either chicken or pork, pate and a rainbow of pickled vegetables that is sure to tantalise your tastebuds.

Oriental Bakery, Mermaid Beach: If you’ve ever stepped inside this bakery and chosen from the mouth-watering selection of delicious treats, you know it’s legit. The bahn mi baguettes are fresh and authentic – choose from chicken or pork, piled high with classic trimmings and coriander. We know this round up is for bahn mi, but we heartily recommend grabbing a pork bun as an extra treat. Thank us later.

Bun Lee, Burleigh Heads: This pastel-hued takeaway nook on James Street in Burleigh Heads specialises in banh mi, bao buns and cold-brew coffee. Sink your teeth into a crisp baguette roll loaded with your choice of meat or tofu alongside traditional Vietnamese fillings such as carrot, coriander, cucumber and chilli.

Cubby Bakehouse, Chinderah: The iconic Cubby bahn mi is served one of three ways – brimming with lashings of free-range lemongrass-marinated pork fillet, piled high with crunchy karaage chicken or there’s even a breakfast banh mi with fried egg, bacon and Swiss cheese. Whatever your choice, it’ll come served on a crusty Cubby roll – and we recommend adding sweet potato fries, because why not?

NAÂMI Bahn Mi, Burleigh Heads: While it may house one of Burleigh’s favourite hidden bars, the casual Vietnamese take away that serves as a front for the speakeasy is not to be missed either. Grab a fresh bahn mi to keep you fuelled for a night out before ducking through the secret door for one of the delectable cocktails.

VN Bakery, Southport: Nestled in Australia Fair, this is a go-to for fresh and authentic Vietnamese dishes and baked goodies. Alongside rice paper rolls and piping-hot pho, you’ll find delicious banh mi baguettes made to order with tasty pork, chicken or meatballs served with all the usual banh mi trimmings.

Jimmy Wah’s, Burleigh Heads: In true form, there’s a little bit of modern magic sprinkled on Jimmy’s banh mi. The fresh baguette is served at lunch and dinner (in either a half or full size) and comes brimming with a mouth-watering tempura soft-shell crab, crunchy cabbage slaw, fresh coriander and plenty of chilli. Spice up your life and chase it with one of Jimmy’s famed chilli margaritas.

Bánh Mì Southport, Southport: Specialising in, you guessed it, banh mi, this Southport joint is very popular come lunchtime. Its crusty baguettes are smeared with pate, mayo, pickled carrots, green onion, coriander, Maggie sauce and lemongrass chilli sauce, before being topped with your choice of filling. You can pick between crispy pork, lemongrass chicken, salad, tuna, tofu and much more.

Burleigh Baker, Burleigh: If you’ve ever sat at a cafe and marvelled at how unbelievably good the bread tastes, there’s a fair chance you’re already familiar with Burleigh Baker. With that as the vessel for your banh mi, you know you’re in for a good time. Burleigh Baker’s banh mi is filled with your choice of free-range pork or chicken, cucumber, pate, lettuce, sriracha, mayo, pickled carrot and daikon, and kept cosy in a sourdough roll.

Viêt-NAM, multiple locations: Formerly known as Porkeez, Viêt-NAM has locations in Broadbeach, Benowa and Surfers Paradise. The banh mi is banging, to say the very least, and can be filled with the likes of beef brisket, roast pork with crackling, lemongrass chicken, pulled pork, marinated beef, curry beef, caramelised pork, nem nuong (Vietnamese grilled sausage) or fried tofu with vege pate.

Honourable mentions: There’s no shortage of top-notch banh mi slingers on the Gold Coast! You can get your banh mi fix at Roll’d Vietnamese (there are a few locations across the coast), Bake N Grill at Coomera Westfield, Shakermaker Coffee Drive Thru in Arundel and Oxenford Bakery in Oxenford.
