The round-up: five local fresh-produce farm stalls that you need to check out

You don’t have to be a genius to work out that fresh food from the ground is way better for you than food from a box (we’re looking at you, Pop Tarts). You know what’s even better than that? Local produce from local farms. Luckily for us Gold Coast folk, there are plenty of restaurants and cafes that are creating magic from local ingredients, which we get to enjoy as frequently as we wish. Though, if you’re keen to support local farms and fill your own fridge at home with the best seasonal produce, then here’s a bunch of cool local farms stalls where you can stock up on your fresh fruit and vege. These gems are well worth checking out.

Currumbin Valley Harvest
Located on the fringe of Currumbin Valley, this fresh-food hub is set up give you endless options. There is a one-acre greenhouse on the site – one-third of which is open to the public, where you can pick your own produce like kale, rocket, endive, basil, mint and lavender. The other third is set aside as a harvesting section – you pay a fixed fee and you can go in and take what you need for the week. The final section is the marketplace, which sells a bunch of produce from local farms across northern New South Wales. There is total transparency here – everything is marked as being either biodynamic, certified organic, spray-free, or grown locally under ‘unknown conditions’. There’s also a range of artisan products for sale, like honey, jams, sauces, juices, raw cakes and more. You can check out Currumbin Valley Harvest on Saturdays and Sundays from 7:00 am.

Freeman’s Organic Farm
This soil of this iconic Currumbin Valley farm is just as rich as its 102-year history. Located up Tomewin Mountain Road, Freeman’s has some of the best organic produce in town, and arguably the best views in the valley. Pioneered by Arthur Freeman, the 25-acre farm is now in the hand-working hands of fourth-generation farmer, David Freeman. You can also expect to see his 92-year-old father Bill Freeman working there too, after more than 70 years on the farm. Freeman’s opens from Friday through to Monday from 7:30 am, with the on-site cafe called ieight Cake open from Friday to Sunday. Oh, and Monday is bargain day, with 25 per cent off all of the remaining produce. David also takes one-hour farm tours every Sunday at 10:00 am, which are a great way to explore the farm and learn a bit more about the farm’s impressive history.

Farm & Co.
If you’ve heard of  ‘the place with the sunflowers’ on Instagram – then this is it. Despite it’s current (and growing) popularity, Farm & Co. in Cudgen has actually been running since 2002, when current owner Michele Stephens took ownership of the former avocado farm. There are a bunch of Gold Coast chefs that head down here to source their produce on the daily, which we, the lucky diners, get to enjoy at our fave local restaurants. If you’re filling up your own fridge, you’ll find lots of organic produce from the farm stocked at the roadside stall, and what isn’t grown here is sourced from other local suppliers – it’s truly a one-stop shop. Farm & Co. is nestled on Cudgen Road, which links the Pacific Motorway to Kingscliff beach. Blink and you’ll miss it – but trust us, this is one worth keeping your eyes open for. By the way, the sunflowers are just as amazing in real life.

Ground Grocer
If you’ve never ventured into The Eco Village in Currumbin Valley, then here’s a great excuse to do so. Ground Grocer, nestled in the grounds of the sustainable community, is open to the public every Saturday from 7:00 am through to 1:00 pm. It’s the perfect way to soak up the village vibe, and sort your fruit and vegetables for the week, with a spread of organic local produce and wholefoods on offer. You can get yourself a co-op membership, where you can pre-order an entire box of fruit and vegetables to pick up on the Saturday. You’ll also be able to pick yourself up some cold-pressed juices and whole-food pantry products while you’re at it. On the second Saturday of the month, sustainable eco market The Green Marquee adds even more green-based hype to the space, with a bunch of eco-friendly, handmade stalls. Hot tip – keep your eyes peeled for the kangaroos.

Rain & Co.
This new fresh food gem has just opened its doors on Hayter Street in Currumbin, just in between the M1 and the valley. It’s open Tuesday to Saturday from 8:00 am, with a full spread of fruit and vegetables straight from the local farmers. There’s everything from apples to bananas, watermelons and sweet, juicy pines – plus heaps of fresh vegetables like kale, pumpkin, sweet potatoes and all of the colourful veges you can imagine. This is a primo spot for the southern locals those that don’t have the luxury of stocking up on the fresh stuff on the weekends, too!
