Sip, snack and savour – Dragonfly Espresso & Wine Bar opens in Broadbeach

Broadbeach is back, baby! A dining resurgence beneath The Oasis Shopping Centre has seen a number of new restaurants and cafes open over the last few months, putting the foodie spotlight firmly back on the precinct. The latest addition is Dragonfly Espresso & Wine Bar – let’s go you acquainted.

Most of you will be familiar with Dragonfly’s location at the western end of The Oasis precinct – the dining strip that formerly housed Espana tapas bar, then Franc’s Wine Bar and Deli and more recently 1927. The hub has now had a new lease on life, with chef and owner Michael Smith (who has Hayman Island and Sofitel kitchens on his resume) creating the new day-and-night space in a bid to offer diners a refined menu in a relaxed setting. By day, Dragonfly is all about espresso, breakfast and light lunches. Early birds will find everything from scrambled eggs with chilli, goats curd and bacon on sourdough, through to the eye-catching golden Hong Kong egg waffles with vanilla custard, berry compote and pistachio praline, topped with a mini chocolate-dipped ice-cream (yes, that’s acceptable for breakfast).

As the sun sets, Dragonfly makes a seamless transition to focus on wine, tapas and fine dining. Start with light plates like the seared tuna sashimi with salsa and a sherry and salted-lemon dressing, or the grilled baby eggplant in Korean BBQ sauce with a summer salad. There’s a selection of both individual and share dishes for the main affair – if you like to eat from your own plate, you’ll find dishes like blue swimmer crab and sea-scallop lasagne with mustard oil, and a wild-caught barramundi with a broccoli and ricotta mousse. To share, you can sink your teeth into a slow-roasted lamb shoulder coated in Mildura honey and seeded mustard served with crushed peas, mint and broad beans, or a whole New Zealand John Dory with Cloudy Bay clams. The seating sprawls outside, though if you (and your pals) are looking to treat yo’self, you can book the eight-seat chef’s table inside and design your own five to 12-course degustation.
