Satisfy your sweet tooth with a delicious doughnut
The humble doughnut, in all its pillowy sugar-encrusted perfection, is often dismissed as just a treat to keep kids quiet in the supermarket but doughnuts can be delicious treats for adults too. Whether you prefer the simplicity of a modest cinnamon variety or something a little fancier and more decadent with a little more icing, we’ve round up a bunch of local cafes, bakeries and market stalls that serve up delightfully fresh adult-appropriate doughnuts for your eating pleasure.
Chances are if you’ve been to the Palm Beach Farmers Market on a Saturday, you’ve seen people wandering around holding handfuls of deep-fried joy wrapped in a serviette looking mighty chuffed with themselves. You can pretty much guarantee they’ve found the Donut Forget I Love You stand that is brimming with steamy, fresh organic doughnuts in an array of mouth-watering flavours including Kahlua and White Chocolate with Candied Macadamia or Wild Berry Jam. Slightly further up the coast, Vivré a Vie in Mermaid Beach also cook up some pretty amazing sourdough doughnuts as a Saturday treat. Good luck deciding between the Salted Caramel, Chocolate and Citrus & Coconut though, it’s a pretty impossible choice but lucky for you they’re all delicious so you can’t really go wrong. While you’re in the area, pop in to Skull & Bones Espresso Boutique on the Gold Coast Highway and grab a Bronut (you guessed it, a Brioche Doughnut) in one of the many incredible flavours including Lemon Glaze, Caramel and Glazed to name just a few. Make it even more amazing with some Nutella or ice-cream filling, it will pretty much change your life. But before you grab your car keys, these fantastic fusions are only available on Fridays and Saturdays. Be quick, they’ve been known to sell out, fast.
If your hankering for a little something sweet isn’t confined to a Saturday, Two Little Bakers in Mudgeeraba whips up some scrumptious doughnut selections alongside their perfectly topped cupcakes and decadent slices. Or if you’re up Surfers way, pop into Spanish Doughnuts in Cavill Avenue and grab a Churro. Go all out and order a Bombon Churro that is encased in a delicate shell of chocolate or a Designer Churro that is filled with your choice of gooey insides including custard, chocolate, caramel, strawberry or Nutella. Spanish Doughnuts are cooked in 100% canola oil using 100% Australian made products if that helps to ease any impending food-guilt.
If you’re talking sweets on the Gold Coast, it would be amiss not to mention The Paddock Bakery at Burleigh Heads. Every morning the wonderful and skilled bakers whip up a sugary storm including Salted Caramel Pretzel Cookie Crumb Doughnuts, their famous Nutella Doughnuts and a mind-blowing muffin croissant hybrid they lovingly refer to as a Chocolate Praline Cruffin. As soon as these bad boys emerge from the kitchen there’s already a line-up around the block so you’ll have to be quick to get your hands on one of these tasty morsels! Slightly down the road at Burleigh Social, you can also find some pretty incredible Nutella doughnuts and miscellaneous other sweet treats from time to time.
If it’s extreme decadence you seek, take a trip to Blackboard Coffee in Varsity Lakes, or its sister venues Larder Burleigh Waters and Griffith St Larder in Coolangatta and grab yourself an awe-inspiring soft serve-filled caramel-injected indulgence. Alongside the doughnuts, there is also a mighty tempting selection of eclairs and cronuts to take your treat to the next level. If you’re not familiar with a cronut, it is a doughnut that is made using croissant pastry, deep-fried and slathered in something equally as delicious like chocolate or coconut, or both. Be warned, they’re not for the faint hearted. Happy eating!
