Door 50 sits on Peerless Avenue on the northern end of Mermaid Beach, just a few skips from the ocean. Owner and Gold Coast local Nick Breuss is a familiar face on the local cafe scene, and set out to create Door 50 to offer the simple things, done well. The breakfast and lunch menus are uncomplicated and tasty – so don’t expect a towering eggs benny and fancy edible flowers here. Rather, you’ll find crunchy, fresh-made paninis with fillings like salami, provolone and dijon, as well as flaky pastries, sourdough toast with homemade jam, smashed avo and ricotta, and everyone’s guilty pleasure – oozing ham and cheese croissants.

For the fresh and healthy crew (Door 50 neighbours Essence of Living pilates, so there will be a few post-downward-dog turmeric lattes to be had), the all-day menu offers plenty of conscious options from the housemade granola with Greek yoghurt, acai thickshakes and bowls, plus a selection of cold-pressed juices. If you prefer to indulge (just a little) then treat yo’self to a waffle with maple syrup and ice-cream, or lash out with something from the cabinet – there’s everything from apple strudel, fresh cookies, eye-catching cakes, pastries and sweet, sweet muffins.
