Lick your lips – Korean fried-chicken bar Do Dream Chicken arrives in Mermaid Beach

If you’re a carnivore, chances are you’ve got a soft spot for fried chicken. Everybody does. The whole crispy-on-the-outside-tender-on-the-inside situation is enough to make anyone in their right mind weak at the knees. Just when you thought the seaside locale of Mermaid Beach couldn’t get any more delicious, in comes Do Dream Chicken – a tasty dispensary specialising in Korean-style fried chicken.

This 25-seat chook nook is the second Do Dream venue on the coast – the first arrived in Southport back in 2010, when owner Joon Kim left his native South Korea to bring the tastes of authentic Korean fried chicken to our shores. The Mermaid Beach edition of Do Dream Chicken is in good company, sharing the same Gold Coast Highway-fronting complex as Poké Poké, FuFu, Goccia Italian and Background (Barista). While the offering is a little more expansive than its Southport sibling, the menu is still intentionally concise, with juicy and super-crispy deep-fried chicken as the hero.

Your choice of chicken tenders, wings or drumsticks are covered with a very thin layer of a seasoned coating (a secret recipe) and deep fried to order. You can keep it plain and crispy, or spice up your life and have the pieces tossed in sauces like spicy barbecue, garlic soy and sweet chilli. It’s all served simply with shoestring fries and a finely cut Asian-style creamy coleslaw. You’ll also find fried-chicken burgers layered with classic toppings like cheese, lettuce and mayonnaise on the menu, while slightly lighter options like the crumbed chicken salad and teriyaki rice bowls balance things out. If you agree that beer is fried chicken’s best friend, you can also enjoy a cheeky schooner of Little Creatures pale ale or pilsner fresh from the tap.

Do Dream Chicken Mermaid Beach officially opens on Monday October 8.
