Char Baa brings global barbecue to Burleigh Heads
If you’ve spent some time loitering around the Lower Gold Coast Highway in the last week, you may have noticed a hint of something slightly smoky in the air. The source of the delicious scent is the suburb’s newest resident, Char Baa.
In Australia, we’ve become accustomed to throwing a snag on a gas-powered grill and calling it a barbecue, venture outside the country and you’ll be amazed to discover that every culture has their own take on the humble past-time. Inspired by global cuisine, Char Baa is bringing proper authentic charcoal barbecue to the Gold Coast. Wrap your hands around a flat bread of spit-roasted lamb, zesty homemade tzatziki, hummus, tomato, parsley and onion, get messy with some beef ribs that are slathered with sticky homemade barbecue sauce and cabbage slaw or get a little exotic with barramundi topped with sambal and coconut in banana leaves. The varied menu offers authentic tastes of the Mediterranean, Middle East, North and South America and Asia.
Char Baa is the latest venture from Olivia and Gaynor, the exceptionally talented chefs behind The Little Plate and The Little Bar. Inspired by their own culinary adventures abroad, the pair is passionate about maintaining authenticity and offering restaurant quality fare in a casual takeaway eatery. Against the far wall, the charcoal grill smolders away producing a mouth-watering aroma that lingers in the air. While a gas-powered grill would undoubtedly be easier on all fronts, the ladies lovingly tend to the live flame to create that truly authentic charcoal coating that is simply inimitable from gas. For now, there is a selection of soft drink available with the view to offer craft beers and ciders down the track. There are also vegetarian and gluten free options available.
