Sink boilermakers and sip fairy-floss martinis at Cabana Bar

As the mercury dips, there’s nothing better than a vibrant cocktail with a decent kick to warm the cockles. We’re about to delve into winter, which means bars are shifting away from fruity, effervescent concoctions to the more unique flavours from gin, various whiskies and Pimms. Cabana Bar & Lounge has dropped its new-season cocktail menu just in time for winter – and it will have you plonking Japanese whisky shots into your schooner (for those playing at home – that’s called a ‘boilermaker’).

Let us take you back to warmer times when Cabana Bar‘s Queensland Passion cocktail took out top gong in our Taste of Queensland award for Best Cocktail – it was a delicious combination of vodka, passionfruit liqueur, Queensland sugar cane, Saint Germain Elderflower liqueur, muddled together, strained and garnished with Queensland-grown fresh dragon fruit and flaming passionfruit. Tastes like summer, right? So, in the spirit of, um, spirits, we thought we’d give you the low-down on Cabana’s latest spread of new-season drinkables.

So, these boilermakers feature a shot of spirits served with a beer. Here, you’ll find combinations like Ketel One vodka with a schooner of Great Northern, Wild Turkey Honey with Lazy Yak, and barrel-aged Nikka Japanese whisky with Mountain Goat Steam Ale  – you can either sip them simultaneously, or drop the shot in the beer. Everybody’s doing it. You’ll find a selection of giant shared cocktails (note, they are for sharing) like the Singapore Mule with ginger liqueur and fresh lemongrass, and if sharing’s not your game, then direct your attention to the signature cocktails. There’s the fairy-floss martini with vanilla vodka, elderflower liqueur, lemon juice, cranberry and apple juice, and the Zac Attack (named after Cabana’s famed bartender) with Alize Blue Pavan liqueur with Blue Curacao, pineapple and lemon juice. Keep it fresh with the Gin Garden featuring gin with elderflower liqueur with fresh lime, cucumber and green apple, or keep it sweet and belly-warming with the Sweet-Toothed Old Fashioned with American Honey bourbon, cognac and bitters. Let’s get sipping, pals.
