The round-up: the coast’s best burritos to wrap your mitts around

Burying your face into a burrito and feeling the sauce drip ungracefully down your hand is undoubtedly one of life’s true culinary joys. If you share our love of burritos, read on dear reader because we’ve round-up some of the coast’s best to sink your teeth into.

Alfred’s Diner: Brimming with goodness and made fresh to order, these bad boys are a total steal at just $12. If you’re nursing a mean hangover, the Alfred’s burrito will sort you out quick smart but our all-time favourite has to be the chicken slaw – loaded with marinated chicken, cheese, house slaw, sriracha aioli and spinach, it’s pretty much culinary perfection.

Beach Burrito Company: When it’s in their name you know it’s got to be good and Beach Burrito Company at Coolangatta does not disappoint. Dishing up bulging burritos in nearly a dozen different flavour combos, the California-inspired cantina is guaranteed to take you to a happy place.

California Cantina: The younger sister of Burleigh’s California Tacos, California Cantina has brought the venue’s famous fish burritos (among other mouthwatering morsels) to Isle of Capri and judging from the hoards of happy faces, it seems locals can’t get enough. Wash it down with a chilled margarita and you’ve got yourself a recipe for a damn fine time.

California Tacos: If you find yourself teetering on the brink of hangry, get yourself to California Tacos and wrap your mitts around its mighty El Pescador burrito. Loaded with plenty of the good stuff including zesty mango and pineapple salsa, baja aioli, Mexican rice, gooey melted cheese, cabbage and salsa fresca with a squeeze of fresh lime, these burritos definitely require two hands.

Goodness Gracias: Satisfy your craving for burritos without exhausting your entire day’s calorie count with a burrito bowl (or bread envy bowl) from the little yellow shop in Palm Beach. Bursting with authentic Mexican flavour and made fresh to order, Goodness Gracias is takeaway food to feel good about.

Gringo Loco Cantina: Pull up a chair at one of the communal tables, cocktail in hand and watch the sets roll in as you contemplate whether you’re going to devour the pulled pork belly, braised beef cheek, achiote chicken or roast pumpkin and spinach burrito. It’s a tough choice but lucky for you, Gringo Loco Cantina is open seven days a week so there’s plenty of opportunities to try them all.

Guzman y Gomez: If you need a burrito in your face, stat, head to your nearest Guzman and they’ll sort you out in a jiffy. Super quick and super tasty, these humble handfuls of happy are everything you could want in (life) a burrito.

Miss Margarita: With seven mouthwatering flavours to choose from, burrito lovers are truly spoilt for choice at Miss Margarita. If you’re keen to keep the carbs to a minimum, opt for it naked, which is all of the tasty goodness without the flour tortilla, or don’t, we don’t judge.

Pancho’s Mexican Restaurant: Taking things back to beautiful basics, Pancho’s Mexican Restaurant has been a stalwart on the Gold Coast’s Mexican scene since 1980 so it’s fair to say they are doing something right. The remote venue is cash only so make sure you stop at the ATM before you trek out there!

The Burrito Bar: Yes, friends, the rumours are true! The Burrito Bar has ventured down to the Gold Coast to open its first store at Southport this week and suffice to say we’re pretty happy about it. In fact, we’re going to make it our mission to try all ten of the burrito flavours, feel free to join us.

Tupe-Aloha: Guys, let Wednesdays henceforth be known as burrito night with two-for-one burritos at Kirra’s tiki-themed fun house. Yes, that’s one for you and one for a mate (or two for you, again, we don’t judge) for just $16.

Wahoo’s: Known for its seriously good fish tacos, Wahoo’s in Burleigh also throws together a pretty epic burrito. Perfect for post-surf feeds and well, anytime really, the 12-inch wraps are just $7.95 all day everyday. Seriously.

Zambrero: Just in case you needed another reason to eat burritos, for every burrito or bowl purchased, Zambrero donates one meal to Stop Hunger Now through the franchise’s Plate 4 Plate initiative. So far, through Zambrero’s 70-odd franchises around Australia, 10-million meals have been delivered to those in need. That’s what we call win-win.
