Bangin’ news – Bunnings sausage sizzles will return later this month
The enticing smell of caramelised onions, the difficult decision of what sauce will top off your sausage sandwich (always a tomato-mustard combo) and the feel-good factor that your gold coins are going towards charity – oh, how we have missed Bunnings sausage sizzles. A community staple for 26 years, Bunnings’ banger-filled barbecues were forced to stop cooking in March due to COVID-19. Following too many months of sizzle withdrawals, the home-improvement heroes are firing up the barbecues again and the much-anticipated return of this charity cook-up will be here sooner than you think …
In great news for carnivores across the country, Bunnings will trial a return of its sausage sizzles in Tasmania and the Northern Territory this weekend, as part of its carefully phased re-introduction of the community fundraising favourite. If all goes well with the first round of sausage slinging, the much-loved sizzle sessions will be back up and running in Queensland and the rest of the country towards the end of July – yippee! To maintain the safety of sausage sizzle staff and customers, Bunnings has enhanced its safety measures, introducing separate ordering and pick-up points to allow for 1.5-metres of physical distancing and increased cleaning processes and hygiene requirements.
This is a massive win not just for us meat-eaters, but also for the local community groups that use the weekend barbecue bash as a means of raising money (more than 40,000 sausage sizzles are run by local community groups each year). After COVID-19 forced our favourite weekend foodie pit-stop to shut up shop, Bunnings generously donated over $1.2 million of $500 gift cards to community groups who had to cancel barbecue bookings.
So if you’re hungry for a socially-distanced snag, head to your local Bunnings later this month and keep an eye out on socials for any up-to-date announcements.
