Bstow brings share food and gin cocktails to Palm Beach
We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again – Palm Beach is really turning up the heat. Bstow, the much-anticipated restaurant venture by the talented duo behind Feather and Docks cafe, Vaughan Smith and Rihannan Flanagan, has officially opened its doors – the second venue to open in the beachside suburb in as many weeks. Perched along the Gold Coast Highway, Bstow adds a new element to Palmy’s flourishing dining scene with its unique industrial interior proving the perfect space to showcase its intricate new spin on modern share food.
There’s no signage out the front of Bstow, and that’s intentional. Instead, there is a massive iron tree adorned with amber glass leaves at the front of the venue, which will light up by night. The lack of signage is just one of many elements of distinctiveness that will have you drawn to the new Palm Beach night spot, which is located directly below the recently opened 8th Ave Terrace. The polished concrete floors and black paint dripping down the structural cement pylons adds a real sense of rawness to Bstow. It’s an open space, but the sheer size of the bar and the contrast of the pendant lights against the darkened interior creates a feeling of warmth and comfort.
The menu spans from bar food to small and large share plates, and simple-yet-vibrant desserts. The pickled mussels with aioli and crisps is a stand-out to start, alongside the rice crisp with smoked kangaroo and oyster cream. On the share plate menu, you’ll find intricately presented dishes like beef tongue with picked watermelon and radish, stuffed tomato with ratatouille, sprouts and cashew, and pork belly with beetroot, kohlrabi, pear and fermented chilli. Bigger share plates include dry-aged sirloin on the bone, steamed market fish and spatchcock. Finish with a simple dish of seasonal local fruits, topped with a made-to-order honey sponge cake, coconut tapioca and coastal hibiscus sorbet – a dream dessert. The cocktails are on trend with plenty of top-shelf white spirits and small-batch infused gin (yep, it’s all about gin), like the G&Tea with earl grey tea-infused gin with blueberry, lemon and lavender, and the Watermelon Coola with vodka, watermelon shrub, cloudy apple and lemon. An evening of crispy pork belly and gin cocktails sounds mighty fine to us.
