The round-up: breakfast on the Gold Coast

A long, leisurely breakfast (or brunch if that’s your thing) provides the perfect start to the weekend and sets the tone for the remainder of the day. Hedge your bets for a pleasant morning experience with one of the Gold Coast’s best breakfasts.

Superstar Orlando Bloom was recently spied visiting popular Broadbeach haunt, Elk Espresso, twice a day while he and his son Flynn were in town. We’ll go out on a limb and assume he was there for Elk’s insanely pretty French toast or the indulgent Ploughman’s Board that contains a cornbread roll, free range eggs, Bangalow smoked ham, spicy chorizo beans, sweet corn relish, avocado feta mash and oven roasted tomatoes. Grocer and Grind is another one of the Gold Coast’s breakfast institutions with its banana protein pancakes and truffled eggs delivering a satisfying start. No Name Lane in Broadbeach is perfect for a liquid breakfast of the caffeine variety but if you’re in the mood for a little something more substantial, Skull and Bones Espresso Boutique is renowned for the best breakfast bagels in town. If you have overindulged the night before, Alfred’s Diner throws together a hangover curing breakfast burrito that is loaded with bacon, because bacon makes everything better.

If you’re talking healthy breakfast eats on the Gold Coast, it’s hard to go past the My Fav at Commune in Burleigh Heads, a gooey poached egg nestled within half an avocado atop a thick slice of olive ciabatta toast or BSKT Cafe’s famous Navajo Native;  flatbread, beans and two fried eggs topped with avocado and tomato salsa. If the morning has escaped but you’re not quite ready to jump straight into lunch, The Yard Cafe has your breakfast needs covered with its all day breakfast menu.

There’s something deeply satisfying about freshly baked sourdough. If you concur, visit one of the Gold Coast’s artisan bakeries including Vivré a Vie in Mermaid Beach, Burleigh Baker or The Paddock Bakery. Alongside artisan bread, The Paddock Bakery is known for its array of other niceties including the house-roasted muesli, dippy eggs that will take you back to your childhood and their famous Nutella doughnuts. Slightly further down the road, Burleigh Social is offering some classic morning munchies including a good old-fashioned bacon and egg roll and smashed avocado on toast.

On the northern end, Paradox Coffee Roasters in Surfers Paradise is quickly becoming a local favourite for morning munchies as is Raw Espresso in Southport and RAW Kitchen and Espresso at Sanctuary Cove. If you’re in the mood for a Yankee feast, Tribeca NYC on Chevron Island is your place with the likes of the American Superhero Breakfast that contains Tribeca’s famous baked eggs, and the Good Morning NYC bagel that is topped with crispy American bacon, an egg, Swiss cheese and smothered in smoky sweet barbecue sauce. For a hearty start, tuck into Daark Espresso’s warm vanilla bean and quinoa porridge that is adorned with fruit compote and candied nuts or the crispy potato hash and thick-cut Barossa bacon from the cafe’s new winter menu. For serious starvations, head to QT’s BAZAAR for a beautiful breakfast bounty inspired by worldy flavours.

Famished southern dwelling breakfast seekers needn’t look any further than Espresso Moto’s South of the Border breakfast that is jammed full of free-range eggs, bacon, chorizo, mushroom, tomato and fire roasted capsicum cannellini beans served with a lightly toasted tortilla. For something a little less extravagant, Good Day Coffee in Tugun offers a hearty homestyle menu of roasted tomatoes and goats fetta, eggs with a selection of accompaniments or homemade granola with yoghurt and poached pear. Down Coolangatta way, pull up a seat at Black Sheep Espresso Baa and order yourself the Tasmanian smoked salmon eggs benedict with fresh spinach, and lime hollandaise. Finally, if you’re in the mood for a little something sweet, Larder Burleigh Waters and it’s sister venues Griffith St Larder and Blackboard in Varsity Lakes offers all of your breakfast favourites but it’s pretty hard to pass up the French toast topped with whipped Nutella mousse, toasted hazelnuts and raspberry.
