Popular Kirra beach bar and eatery Bread ‘n’ Butter is back – and it’s all grown up

After a two-year hiatus, southern favourite Bread’n’Butter has reopened on the Kirra esplanade. Frequent visitors of the popular bar and eatery shed a tear back in 2016 when it was forced to close its doors to make way for the (now complete) Iconic apartment tower. Now, just in time for summer, Bread’n’Butter is back, baby! This time, it’s all grown up.

Long live the memories of Bread’n’Butter’s original beachfront vintage digs, tasty pizzas, killer cocktails and party vibe. While the entire site may have been demolished, co-owner Jorge Mauleon and the team never really went away. Not long after closing up Bread’n’Butter, the team set up The Italian Job at The Collective in Palm Beach, and continued dishing up street food through a regular stall a Miami Marketta and its two roaming food trucks. Now, two years on, Bread’n’Butter is back – while the address and name remain the same, it has shifted its focus to stand on its own two feet as a restaurant, rather than its former guise as a bar and late-night cocktail hang. While the menu reflects this new direction, the fit-out also underscores its more-refined approach, sporting an edgy, industrial vibe thanks to the team at Spaced Cubed Studio, the creatives behind a raft of local venues like Mamasan, Mr PP’s and The Collective.

With a Spanish and Italian lean, the new Bread’n’Butter offers a menu of pizzas, share plates, salads, handmade pastas and gnocchi, with everything from the sauces and accompaniments to the hand-leavened pizza bases, made from scratch in house. Snacks like butterflied wild-caught king prawns with salsa verde and chorizo-topped patatas bravas will get you started, while appetising larger dishes like the handmade gnocchi in a simple butter, garlic and sage sauce, and the four-cheese pizza will fill the more sizeable gaps. Sweet tooths have the difficult choice of capping it off with traditional Spanish churros with chocolate dipping sauce, Nutella pizza or the traditional Italian tiramisu. Behind the bar you’ll find local and international wines (including Italian wines on tap), tap beers and a series of fun cocktails.
