Since overseas trips are off the menu for the foreseeable future, Kirra local Matt Burke and the guys behind the neighbouring Bondi Grill’e are bringing the Bali vibes to Coolangatta with a new bohemian-inspired bar and eatery, Bo’teku. The new beachside bar has taken over the former George’s Paragon site along Marine Parade and aims to create a welcoming space to while away an afternoon with a drink in hand. The venue takes cues from Bondi Grill’e in Uluwatu by showcasing a culinarily diverse menu of share-style food and cocktails. Settle in and get acquainted with Bo’teku. 

The half-price lunches of George’s Paragon may be gone, however seafood still makes up a significant portion of the menu at Bo’teku, with venue owner Matt personally procuring the freshest catch daily from his supplier in Tweed Heads. Treat your tastebuds to the tuna tartare with avocado, black caviar, ponzu and sourdough or go all out with whole barbecue bugs. There’s a succinct-yet-satisfying selection of share-style appetisers including mozzarella croquetas and crispy pork-belly baos slathered with seeded-mustard sauce to nibble followed by chicken drumettes with blue-cheese sauce and seared wagyu-steak tagliata with salsa verde. Just be sure to leave room for a serve of the Who Burnt The Pineapple dessert, which tastes like summer on a plate.

When it comes to the drinkables, Bo’teku is taking it back to house-party days with a humble spiked punch, except this time there’s three different kinds to choose from (none that include Passion Pop). The frosé (that’s frozen rosé, in case you missed it) promises to be a hit come summer and for those who cannot resist a cheeky marg, there are no less than five different varietals – lime, strawberry, passionfruit, mango and chilli. There’s also a mighty tempting selection of summer highballs, sours and sweet cocktails to wet your whistle. More of a simple sipper? Frothy favourites Balter and Stone & Wood are on tap.

By definition Bo’teku is a place for bohemians looking for a good drink, great food and relaxed conversation, which is precisely what you will find here. Lounge-style tunes including a jazzy cover of Radiohead’s ‘Creep’ set the scene, whilst a combination of high and low tables as well as a prized chesterfield lounge invite you to settle in and get comfortable. A neon sign with the words ‘you are exactly where you need to be’ provides a visual reminder that sometimes, the best conversations happen long after the food has been devoured. Pops of greenery replace the signature blue-and-white interior of its predecessor signalling a bright and cheerful new chapter for the beachside space.
