Ethical home brews – Blackboard launches biodegradable coffee pods

Do you have a Nespresso machine? Do you? Come on, be honest, we’re all friends here. Whilst we never (ever) assume, we’re going to go out on a limb and say that there are a fair chunk of you that DO have a Nespresso in your possession. Well, it doesn’t have to be your dirty little secret anymore, because Blackboard Coffee has just launched its first collection of coffee pods. Not only can you enjoy the Blackboard goodness at home, you’ll also be changing the world, one pod at a time (for real).

It took about five months of testing to get the first Blackboard pods right, and the process went well beyond just nailing the taste – but just so you know, they taste just like, well, Blackboard coffee (duh). Okay, let’s all take a moment and think about how many coffee pods are used every day. It’s pretty mind-boggling to think how many of those coffee-filled capsules never actually make it to the recycling bin. Well, Blackboard’s all-new pods are completely biodegradable and compostable – as in, the entire pod, not just the casing. If you want proof, then just ask Blackboard owner Nick Pearce – he throws the pods in his own garden, and they totally break down.

So, by switching to these pods, you’ll be jumping on Blackboard’s quest to lessen the footprint that coffee has on the environment. Not only are the pods sustainable, they are also ethical – the coffee inside the pods is completely traceable, using ethically sourced beans that give direct recognition to the hard work of coffee farmers across the globe. This concept of ethical and environmentally sustainable coffee is nothing new for Blackboard – it’s just how they roll. But, by venturing into the world of coffee pods, Nick and the Blackboard team are fuelling our everyday conveniences, without a cost to the earth … and we reckon that’s pretty darn cool. Get your mitts on some pods at Blackboard in Varsity or you can order online. While you’re on the ‘Gram, head over to Blackboard Coffee Roasters to follow the pod journey.

Disclaimer: In case you’re wondering – yes, we totally have a Nespresso machine in our possession. You know, for emergencies … #sprung.
