The round-up: where to get your marg on this National Margarita Day

Nothing says ‘party’ like a national day dedicated to a drink, and this Monday 22 February is National Margarita Day – a whole day of celebration in honour of the tequila-based tipple. To commemorate the occasion, we’ve rounded up some of the coast’s best margaritas for you. National Margarita Day may fall on a Monday, but we’ve done the hard work early so you can enjoy a marg (or a few) this weekend – unless you fancy a sickie from work. So go ahead, read on, and drink up!

Mexicali, Nobby Beach: Head to Mexicali for not only one of the best classic margaritas on the coast but also Jug’uritas (a big yes to margis by the jug). Sit back in the sunshine and settle in for a rooftop Mexican feast. If you can’t go past the coconut margarita, we don’t blame you – they’re truly excellent.

La Diosa, Surfers Paradise: For salty margaritas and Mexico City-style tacos, La Diosa Mexicana is where it’s at. Located in the Circle on Cavill precinct, the restaurant and bar slings a wide array of margaritas including the Desert Rose Margarita, featuring elderflower liquer and lime. If you’re looking to switch it up, go for a Mezcal-Rita, which substitutes tequila for mexcal for a more smoky marg.

Caracara Cantina, Tugun: The street-front cantina slings a range of margaritas to suit all tastes, from a classic marg’ to a marmalade-infused breakfast margarita, as well as Mexican favourites like lageritas (classic margarita served tall and topped with Tecate lager) and micheladas (tequila, spicy tomato juice, citrus, spices and lager). A worthy contender for your celebrations.

Bonita Bonita, Mermaid Beach: As one of the coast’s first modern-Mexican eateries, Bonita Bonita has earned a hefty following of fans. We’d highly recommend trying the Bonita marg, which features agave, candied jalapenos, lemon, fresh cucumber juice and is finished with a chipotle salt rim.

Margarita Cartel, Burleigh Heads: As the Burleigh-based venue’s name would suggest, margaritas are the specialty behind the bar, with an extensive series of variations on offer – and they start at just $12. Hellooooo happiness.

Frida Sol, Palm Beach: The younger, sassy sibling of Bonita Bonita enjoys an elevated position along the Gold Coast Highway in Palm Beach (straight above The Scottish Prince). Sip on one of Frida Sol’s ever-changing selection of frozen margs or try the Verdita margarita, which is a mezcal-based take on the usual marg with a smoky flavour paired with pineapple, jalapenos and coriander.

Hail Mary, Burleigh Heads: Tucked in about half way down James Street, Hail Mary dishes up some seriously mouthwatering margs, with a special that changes weekly – not that we’d ever get sick of the classics! Hail Mary also has sunset specials from 5:00–6:00 pm everyday, perfect for sipping over a taco or five.

El Camino Cantina, Robina: A visit to El Camino won’t be complete without one (or two) of its signature giant margaritas, served shaken or frozen. If you can’t decide, grab a tasting paddle and sip on a selection of four.

California Tacos, Burleigh Heads: The home of the margarita tower (yep, they exist!) in Burleigh Heads, California Tacos has margs on tap and is perfectly located to roll in off the beach and enjoy some sandy sips.

Tupe-Aloha, Kirra: Described as ‘when Hawaii meets Mexico and has a holiday in Kirra’, Tupe-Aloha serves up a killer marg and often has live music. It’s good vibes all round and we can’t go past the Coco-Loco coconut and lime margarita, which is a delicious mix of 1800 Coconut Tequila, Malibu, coconut cream, fresh lime and toasted coconut.

Beach Burrito Co, Coolangatta: Not just serving up top-notch burritos, Beach Burrito Co.’s jugs of margarita are served up just metres from the beach at this bright and breezy, Californian-style Mexican eatery.

Mr. Consistent: If you’d rather enjoy your margis from the comfort of your house (where pants are entirely optional), Gold Coast-based cocktail curator Mr. Consistent has you covered with a pre-made marg mix that’s not only super simple but downright delicious.

Thirsty for more? We love to see it! A bunch of local venues including Mr HizolasBineHideaway Kitchen and BarNightjarNightcap and Precinct Brewing Co. are treating tequila-lovers to $15 margs for the month of February – it may be almost over, but it’s not too late! Head here for the low down.
