Chow down some Portuguese street food from barraca
The irresistible aroma of smoky, char-grilled chicken marinated in fiery chilli sauce wafts out from the open side of barraca – Portuguese Street Grill luring hungry diners like moths to a flame. A relatively new addition to the Gold Coast’s fleet of food trucks, Christian and Sandra Vaughan have already built up a strong local following.
For Christian and Sandra, the best food isn’t necessarily found in the most expensive restaurant in town but often in the backstreets and alleyways where you’ll find a local cook creating fare from their homeland. It was this notion that inspired the pair to create barraca – Portuguese Street Grill. As its name suggests, the food truck is bringing a little taste of Portugal to the Gold Coast with wings, flame-grilled spiced chicken fillets and burgers that pack a serious flavour punch. In true Portuguese-style, the food isn’t about fanfare; it’s earthy peasant-style nosh that is cooked with fire and passion.
Spending much of her childhood between Mozambique and Portugal, cooking with smoky paprika, chilli, garlic and lemon is second nature to Sandra, so you can expect a little heat. barraca can generally be found between a few of their regular locations including Bob Jane T-Marts in Mermaid Beach, Hellenic Function Centre in Bundall, Macintosh Island Park in Surfers Paradise and Balter Brewing Company on Sundays unless they are booked out for a private event.
