Barcode Espresso arrives in Broadbeach with breakfast baos and specialty coffee

You’re forgiven if a shopping centre isn’t the first place you think of when you’re hunting for specialty coffee. Though, there’s a new addition to the coast’s caffeine scene that is aiming to shift your thinking – it’s called Barcode Espresso and its fresh new digs have just opened up at The Oasis in Broadbeach.

If you’ve had your eye on The Oasis over the past two years, you’ll know it’s a different place to what it once was, with a raft of new foodie names like Harajuku Gyoza, Main Street Burger Bar, Grand Dynasty Chinese, Brio Emporium, Beachside Pavilion and Elk Espresso joining the centre’s outdoor precinct over time. The all-new Barcode Espresso is bringing the goodness inside The Oasis by setting up shop in a custom-built space on level one. The kiosk-style concept is the brainchild of local hospitality trio Scott Kelly, Michael Cartledge and Emma Daglish, who set out to bring quality coffee (Supreme Roasters is pouring) and a delicious food offering (that covers both cafe classics and new-school eats) to the heart of the constantly transforming Broadbeach shopping precinct.

Co-owner and chef Scott Kelly, who was most recently the head chef at Daark Espresso, has crafted a menu with a bit of extra flair – you’ll still find your cafe favourites, but those wanting to step outside the square a little can do so with dishes like truffled mac ‘n’ cheese croquettes served with poached eggs, sauteed mushrooms, spinach and lashings of garlic aioli, and the eye-catching Benedict bao, intricately plated with poached eggs, bacon, a herbed hollandaise and punchy sriracha. Sweet tooths can indulge in the raspberry and white-chocolate waffles, while those with a hankering for something substantial can tuck into Southern fried-chicken burgers, a simple cheeseburger with pickled onion, or a hearty haloumi, mushroom and egg burger – all served on a Japanese milk bun. There’s also a series of fresh sandwiches and vibrant salads on offer daily, while the counter is brimming with house-made sweets that deserve your attention.
