The owners of Currumbin’s former Beach Shack are back with bantR, a convivial neighbourhood cafe

When Espresso Moto abruptly closed its doors, the Palm Beach locals lost more than just a caffeine fix – they lost a gathering spot. At long last, the Gold Coast Highway fronting site has turned the page on an exciting new chapter, with seasoned hospitality veterans Dean and Susan Olarenshaw at the helm. The new offering is aptly named bantR, leaving little doubt as to the kind of vibe the new caffeine slinger offers. Here’s everything you need to know about the neighbourhood newcomer …

Among those who were left without their daily coffee pit-stop in their immediate vicinity was Dean and Susan Olarenshaw, who previously owned Currumbin’s Beach Shack (where Tommy’s Italian now resides) for nearly 20 years. Having sold the much-loved institution back in 2016, Dean and Susan had no concrete plans to return to hospitality, but this was an opportunity they couldn’t ignore.

Knowing the local clientele like the back of their hands, with the added benefits of being smaller than their previous hospitality ventures, Dean and Susan immediately saw potential in the 40-seater beachside spot. Their bid proved successful and they received the keys on July 1, getting to work gutting the interior. Everything you see is new, Susan tells us. “The floors, the counter, the light fittings, all of it,” she said.

The interior of bantR is an eclectic blend of mid-century design with pop-culture influences, accented by quirky sports memorabilia and an Instagram-worthy mural of Samuel L. Jackson inspired by the cult classic Pulp Fiction, which has quickly become a talking point for visitors. Dean, the creative force behind the fit-out, carefully curated the decor, balancing a nostalgic vibe with a modern twist.

On the menu, bantR keeps things simple but delicious with a selection of crowd favourites including smashed avocado, fritter stacks and eggs Benny with your choice of bacon, spinach, salmon or pulled pork. Lunch-goers can sink their teeth into one of three burgers (pulled pork, beef, karaage chicken) or look to the cabinet for easy grab-and-go items such as ham and salad wraps or bacon and egg rolls.

As for drinks, you’ll find Allpress coffee alongside the ‘it’ drink of the moment strawberry matcha, smoothies and juices.

Since opening, bantR has become a fast favourite among locals, with its welcoming atmosphere and community-centric approach to hospitality. The name itself reflects the inherently social vibe of the venue, where friendly banter and a sense of togetherness are always on the menu.
