Mermaid Beach welcomes Bam Bam Bakehouse

If there were such thing as a recipe for sweet success, Ursula and Ben Watts, the brilliantly talented team behind The Paddock Bakery and Mermaid Beach’s new Bam Bam Bakehouse, may very well have it nailed.

Hidden in plain sight off the Gold Coast Highway, it would be easy to drive past Bam Bam Bakehouse none the wiser. The giveaway, however, is the constant stream of cars that now cram a previously deserted carpark. Bam Bam Bakehouse opened its doors earlier this month and looking around at the raw timber and rustic surrounds, you’d be forgiven for thinking the venue might be a replica of the wildly popular The Paddock, the reality, however, is very different indeed. First and foremost, rather than focussing on bread-based treats, the new addition is a French-style patisserie that churns out some impossible-to-resist pastry goods including golden, buttery, flaky croissants and sugar-rolled cruffins topped with home-made raspberry jam and vanilla Chantilly cream. The sweet morsels are baked fresh daily from the magnificent temperature-controlled marbled kitchen encased behind gigantic panes of glass, sometimes twice or thrice, depending on the morning’s traffic. If you’re lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of the pastry wizards working their magic.

If you’re craving something a little more substantial, Bam Bam Bakehouse also offers a bistro-style menu that features simple food done well with just a hint of American excess. Some of the standouts so far have been the Bam Bam Benny; gooey poached eggs, ham off-the-bone, a generous dollop of tarragon hollandaise atop a toasted croissant, and the Man Sandwich, a brioche roll loaded with 14-hour hickory smoked beef brisket and lashings of house-made barbecue sauce. The shaker fries are also pretty hard to pass up. The family-friendly venue offers a range of different seating areas that can accommodate prams and little humans with ease as well as long tables for overdue group catch-ups. Oh, and they’re licensed too, so your catch up can involve wine.
