Say hola to Nobby Beach’s newest Mexican-inspired beer garden Backyard Cantina
There’s something deeply satisfying about kicking back on a Friday afternoon with a taco in one hand and a salty marg in the other. If that sounds like your ideal way to spend a weekend, there’s a brand new open-air cantina in Nobby Beach that has your name written all over it. On a Friday and Saturday night, Backyard Cafe on Lavarack Road transforms into Backyard Cantina and here’s everything you need to know about this tasty newcomer …
Slinging tacos, tunes and top-notch tipples, Backyard Cantina is a vibe. The daytime coffee den has expanded to the neighbouring carpark and created a casual Mexican-inspired beer garden complete with giant lawn games, festoon lights and plenty of picnic tables. Backyard Cantina kicks off from 3:00 pm on Friday and Saturday nights and is the perfect pad for sunset drinks and a snack, or bring the fam (fur babies included) and settle in for a food-coma inducing feast. Whilst lots of places say they are family friendly, Backyard Cantina genuinely is – there’s a dedicated kids menu as well as plenty of space to roll out a rug for the little ones.
The Tex-Mex menu has been designed around sharing over a beer or two. Start with a serve of corn chips with salsa and guac or cheesy Fiesta Fries (yum!) before tackling the rest of the menu, which is filled with nachos, enchiladas and loaded quesadillas. If you’ve got your amigos in tow, the taco platter is perfect for grazing and contains eight tortillas, lettuce, salsa fresca, sour cream, guac and cheese. If your appetite is bigger than Kanye’s ego, the Mucho Burrito is a solid belly filler. Whilst it all sounds mighty tempting, it’s hard to go past the taco salad, which is served in a giant tortilla bowl. Thirsty? You’re in luck – the drinks list is brimming with margaritas, sangria jugs and Tecate beer buckets.
Backyard Cantina kicks off every Friday and Saturday night from 3:00 pm.
