National nosh – must-try Aussie-themed eats rolling out for Australia Day

Who’s firing up some snags on the barbecue this Australia Day long weekend? Or maybe you’re having a crack at making your own pav (ohhh tricky, but go you!). Well, you’re not the only one that’s celebrating Australia through food – a bunch of local legends have created some pretty damn impressive Aussie-themed eats to help us all get into the spirit. From Iced VoVo cocktails to sausage-sizzle pizzas, here’s some of the best Australia Day nosh being rolled out this weekend.

Twice-baked Tim Tam croissants, Iced VoVo eclairs and Anzac cookie croissants at Bam Bam Bakehouse
Seriously, we can’t deal with Bam Bam’s creations at the moment. Hitting the menu for the first time ever is the Tim Tam twice-baked croissant – and it’s only available for Australia Day weekend. Want to know how it’s made? Well, the pastry chefs cut one of their own plain croissants in half and dip it in syrup. It’s then filled with a fluffy chocolate frangipane and a housemade Tim Tam biscuit, before it’s re-baked and topped with Tim Tam cream, dipped in chocolate, drizzled in more chocolate (of course) and finally sprinkled with gold dust. What a mouthful. Plus, Bam Bam is also rolling out the much-loved Iced VoVo eclair and the crunchy Anzac cookie croissant for the occasion. Jazzed? Same. You should definitely pre-order these bad boys online.

Wagon Wheel doughnuts and lamington doughnuts at Paddock Bakery
In true form, Paddock is stepping up to the plate for Australia Day with two lip-smacking creations. The Wagon Wheel doughnut features thin shortbread biscuits sandwiched between soft marshmallows, topped with a chocolate-glazed semi-sourdough doughnut and injected with Paddock’s own housemade raspberry jam – it looks as intriguing as it sounds. Plus, Paddock is bringing back the much-loved lamington doughnut for Australia Day weekend only. Get in there nice and early to guarantee that you’ll get some of these in your hot little hands.

Sausage Sizzle Pizza at Salt Meats Cheese
The humble snag is being given the pizza treatment at Salt Meats Cheese locations in Surfers Paradise and Brisbane’s Gasworks. That’s right – there’s no need to fire up the barbie that you haven’t cleaned since last Australia Day. All you need to do is dine in at either location over the weekend. The pizza comes with a sausage-filled crust and is topped with tomato, onion, mozzarella and more sausage. Just give it a squeeze of some tomato sauce and mustard and you’ve snagged yourself a sizzling good deal.

Meat Pie Jaffle at M&G Café and Bar
This relaxed eatery at The Star Gold Coast is taking two favourite Aussie staples – pies and jaffles – and combining them in delicious fashion for a one-day blackboard special. Available this Friday, the Meat Pie Jaffle will see savoury mince cooked in a rich tomato and beef stock with crispy bacon pieces and rosemary, before being placed between two slices of fresh white bread with tasty cheese – it’s then cooked to perfection in the jaffle machine and served with crispy shoe string fries. What a meaty dream.

Iced Vovo Cocktail at Cowch Dessert Cocktail Bar
Yes, an Iced VoVo cocktail exists and we’re very interested. Get yourself to Cowch at Pacific Fair this Australia Day for a delightful drinkable that gives a honourable nod to the much-loved Iced VoVo biscuit. Chambord is mixed with Malibu and pouring cream, before being topped with whipped cream, coconut, strawberry coulis and, of course, a real-life Iced Vovo biscuit.

Mid-Ozzie Splice at House of Brews
There’s no better way to cool down in the hot Australian summer sun than with a few licks of a Splice ice-cream. Remember those? Well, the team at House of Brews are bringing the pine-lime dream back with the Mid-Ozzie Splice cocktail for Australia Day – it’s a gin sour made with Midori, lime and agave that’s topped with a housemade Midori-spiked ice-cream on a stick. Get on this, mates.

The Oz Day Schnitzel at The Bavarian Bier Café
There’s a three-day party happening this weekend at The Bavarian Bier Cafe with snags (bratwurst) and beer (steins), but the main attraction will be the limited-edition Oz Day Schnitzel. That’s a one-kilogram schnitzel with bacon, three eggs and cheese – it’s available for the entire long weekend and is definitely intended to feed four. Prost! Um, we mean, cheers mate!

Honourable mentions: want more Australian fare? You can sip lamington cocktails at Cabana Bar & Lounge, munch on Gaytime doughnuts from Sweet Bliss Doughnuts at NightQuarter, or get silly on a Pav on the Rocks cocktail from No Name Lane, devour the lamington chia pudding at Elk Espresso and tuck into a Vegemite pizza or Stone & Wood gelato at seagulls.
