The round up: where to find the best American food on the Gold Coast

Can’t the US of A just put Barrack on a month-by-month arrangement until there’s a better candidate that doesn’t have the surname Trump or Clinton? Even better, they should totally let Michelle Obama (and all her dancing goodness) take the reigns – now that’s a no-brainer. Well, despite what we reckon, the presidential election looks to be going ahead, so we thought we’d shift the focus to the one good thing to come out of America – the food. With plenty of American-style menu’s popping up across the Gold Coast, we’re getting pretty spoilt for choice when it comes to pickle-topped burgers, saucy wings, fried chicken and waffles. If your breathing just got a little heavier after reading that, then you’ll know where we’re going with this – here’s where you’ll find the best American eats on the Gold Coast.

Brooklyn Depot: Good brews, American vibes and one helluva menu – you’ll need a few visits here to tick off your burger-eating bucket list. Brooklyn Depot is in the election spirit with the burger of the month – the OUT-N-IN Burger with a crumbed deep-fried beef patty bun, hickory-smoked bacon, American cheese, crispy onion rings, lettuce, tomato, special sauce and Sweet Baby Ray’s barbecue sauce – we want this, now! Guess what – if you order one on election day (which is November 9 for us Aussies) and say ‘vote Trump’ or ‘vote Hillary’, you’ll get a free serve of fries or onion rings. Then wash those words out of your mouth with a Yo Mama strawberry milkshake, pronto.

Tribeca NYC: The name says it all. This Chevron Island gem is a go-to for traditional New York-style food, with everything from bagels and cream cheese to all-American tacos in the morning (yes friends, we said tacos for breakfast), to a spread of different mac ‘n cheese and hot dog variations, plus burgers, wings, sliders, ribs and steaks. The big daddy here is the cheeseburger bagel, or keep it light (ugh, if you must) with the Say What Cobb Salad. We reckon Hillary would be up for the Johnny Wang Bang Bang Chicken.

Easy Street Diner: Anywhere with a portrait of George Costanza on its wall has our vote. Luckily the folk at Easy Street Diner also plate up some unbelievably good American eats – if you’ve never tried a Royale Burger then you simply haven’t lived. Get on this, and while you’re there, grab a fiver of the southern style chicken wings and fist-full of the fried pickle poppers. This is also where you’ll find traditional American-style chicken waffles, complete with smokey bacon and maple syrup. We don’t really know how the human race survived before chicken waffles.

Ball Boy: These boys make the most of their tasty meatballs – you’ll find them in middle of a hot dog bun with a bunch of tasty fillings, as a tiny cheeseburgers slider or as part of an old school American-style cafeteria lunch plate complete with a cheesy waffle, a side sauce, an ice-cream sandwich and a soda pop. Grab a ball bag on-the-go or dine in and soak up the baller vibes with a tinny in hand. Yes, Ball Boy only serve (top quality) tinnies – way cool. Unlike these two.

Lester & Earl: Whilst well-known for its smokey American-style barbecued delights, Lester & Earl has expanded its horizons with its recently launched breakfast trade. We’re talking real deal American breakfasts, like the Texas Ranger with smoked brisket slices, poached eggs and housemade hollandaise on southern-style biscuits, the Kentucky Derby chicken waffles, and pancakes with cornflake ice-cream (this actually exists). The true southern-style buttermilk chicken on biscuits with pepper gravy, poached eggs and greens will have you humming Sweet Home Alabama as you munch. Did we mention they have cornflake ice-cream?

Betty’s Burgers & Concrete Co.: Betty’s is spreading its burger love even further across the Gold Coast with its second establishment at The Kitchens, which opened on November 3 – it seems we can’t get enough of Betty’s good stuff. Spinning out some cool retro American vibes, Betty’s burgers are pure and simple – sink your teeth into the delightfully crispy chicken burger or stick with the classic hand-rolled Angus beef patty with lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese and Betty’s special sauce. It’s a general rule (this may just be our rule) that you can’t go to Betty’s without having a concrete (frozen custard) for dessert. We like making the rules.

One50 Public House: You genuinely feel like you’re in the Big Apple here, though you’re actually on the waterfront in Bundall – but trust us, it’s pretty close to the real thing. The retro New York-style gastro pub serves up tasty American eats from sings and reuben sandwiches to burgers, sliders and cheesy fries with bacon and jalapenos. The 14-hour bourbon-braised beef brisket burger with house slaw is a real smokey delight.

JR’s Smokehouse: JR’s is on the road hitting a bunch of events and markets, so you should follow the movements here and stalk this roving smokehouse immediately. Meaty delicacies like brisket, ribs, pulled-pork and pork shoulders are cooked all day then cut to order, served with sides like tangy coleslaw, horseradish potato salad, spicy mac ‘n’ cheese, ranch-style baked beans and jalapeno corn bread. This is the kind of meat that falls off the bone then melts in your mouth – in true Southern American style.

House of Brews: If carbs aren’t high on your list of concerns, then House of Brews’ southern-style barbecue nosh and 30-plus types of beer will be right up your American alley. Alongside the solid list of suds, there is a plentiful menu of American-inspired meats and mains including brisket, ribs, wings, burgers including the Chicago-inspired Au Cheval burger, plus six different types of fries.

Burgster: The menu at Burgster is inspired the streets of Williamsburg in New York City, so you’ll find a pretty rad combo of modern culture, nostalgia and vintage style from both the food and the fit out. The team at Burgster cut their own chips, make their own sauces and mix their own sodas. You just can’t go past its classic beef burger though, with American cheese, pickles, lettuce, tomato and Burgster special sauce.

Eddie’s Grub House: Eddie’s pays homage to blues, burgers and booze with its rad American style. Pumping out everything from classic cheeseburgers to a whole ‘dirty bird’ fried served with gravy and Memphis slaw, this is where you want to be for whiskey, beers and burgers (oh, and whole fried chickens). If you love a good slab of fries, the Texas chilli cheese fries will complete you.
