Say ciao to Al Chiosco, a little slice of Italy in Kingscliff
There’s something special about Italian food. Often served from a no-fuss establishment and created using traditional methods passed down over generations, there’s a reason the fare is so loved across the world. Inspired by these hole-in-the-wall-style servers of unbeatable pizza is newcomer Al Chiosco. Opening only a couple of weeks ago to crowds of people lining Kingscliff’s Ocean Avenue to get a taste of the perfect slice, Al Chiosco translates to ‘little kiosk’ – referring to the small in space, but big on personality pizza purveyor.
Travelling to Italy constantly over the years and being inspired to bring the Italian culinary kiosk experience to life in Australia, owner Robyn Cheah has joined forces with her business partner Italian Mauro De Riso (the managing director of nearby Halcyon House in Cabarita) to open Al Chiosco. A project that was due to open before Covid hit, the timing has now aligned – and it couldn’t be more perfect as we crave a slice of Europe on home shores. Dishing out pizza by the hefty rectangular slice during the day and family ‘slabs’ plus classic round pizzas at night, the fare is authentic and delicious. Sticking to tradition, the chef’s secret is a Naples-style base, which is known for having a crispy top and a baker’s-style crust while focusing on the best quality toppings.
Not satisfied with just serving up drool-inspiring lunch and dinner fare, Al Chiosco will also be offering up house-made pastries and Social Espresso coffee each morning. With a half-Italian and half-French chef, you can expect favourites like authentic tiramisu and apple flan together with hand-made quiches. At this stage there is limited seating available for lunch, however just as it is in Italy, Al Chiosco was always meant to be a simple affair. Call ahead to order your dinner, pick it up and enjoy on the beach at sunset or cosied up at home with a glass of vino.
