Dancing on the Green NAIDOC Cultural Celebration

When was the last time you let loose and had a good dance? Not just a cheeky two-step shuffle but a really good booty shaking, goofy-grin inducing dance? Every month, you’re invited to cut some sweet shapes at a series of free sunset dance sessions hosted on the lawn at HOTA. There’ll be good vibes galore as you unleash your finest amongst an audience of like-minded dance enthusiasts at Dancing on the Green. From swing to salsa, Bollywood to booty beats to ballroom – each month will bring a new flavour with a complementing live band or DJ.For July’s instalment of Dancing on the Green, you’re invited to celebrate the diversity of NAIDOC week at a very special family friendly dance event. Arrive early to check out the markets from 2:00 pm and meet local artists before the dancing and music kick off at 3:00 pm.
Thelma Plum
After casting a spell on all with her debut EP, ‘Rosie’, Thelma Plum put down her guitar and took giant strides in a brave new musical direction. With triple j Unearthed, NIMA and DEADLY wins under her belt, the constantly animated Thelma relocated from Brisbane to Melbourne to Sydney, absorbing the sounds of the city, developing her craft to expand beyond the six strings.
Leah Flanagan
Emotion and allure are at the heart of Leah Flanagan’s songwriting. The Sydney-based singer/songwriter uses space in an enchanting way – the listener has the sense they can settle amongst the lyrics and become part of the music. And when you settle you get carried away. It’s Leah’s voice that holds you, makes you feel, never in your face, instead making you an offer you can’t refuse. In acknowledgment of NAIDOC’s ‘Because of her’ theme, Leah Flanagan will perform her special arrangement of a poem called ‘Churaki’ written by local Aboriginal community elder Aunty Joyce Summers. The Spirit of Churaki
Hot off the back of the recent acclaimed performances at HOTA and Bleach* Festival 2018, local members from The Spirit of Churaki, perform a special live and intimate, acoustic set featuring crowd favourites from the show. Fingal musicians Kyle, Josh, Jarulah, and Kaleb Slabb who have ancestral ties crossing Gudjingburra, Bundjalung and Yugambeh nations, together with Colin Usher, Sam Pankhurst and Leah Flanagan will have you rocking along to this powerful and evocative saltwater music.
