Enjoy the ultimate under-the-stars cinema experience at Yatala Drive-In

UPDATE Tuesday March 24: Yatala Drive-In Theatre has temporarily closed until further notice. Stay up to date by following the theatre on Facebook.

With many of us practising social distancing to help flatten the curve of COVID-19, finding some form of entertainment-based escape during these trying times has become somewhat of a challenge. Well fear not, leisure seekers! An evening of wholesome throwback fun in the form of a trip to the beloved Yalata Drive-In will cure your case of cabin fever. Located just off the M1 in Stapylton (between Brisbane and the Gold Coast), this well-loved theatre boasts three fields with huge outdoor screens showing everything from the latest blockbusters to retro classics – all to be enjoyed from the comfort of your cosy car.

Since the gates first opened in October 1974, Five Star Cinema’s Yatala Drive-In has been a staple destination for cinema-goers to watch new and classic movies on the big screen. A safer option for those who are social distancing, Yatala Drive-In has a plethora of screenings coming up that will keep movie lovers entertained, including some double-bill features for only $49 per car load – all you have to do is pack the snacks, tune in your car radio and enjoy the show. On Saturday April 18, cram the car with pillows, blankets and treats as John Travolta takes centre stage with a double-bill screening of everyone’s favourite musical Grease and the boogie-inducing Saturday Night Fever. If you’re after some coming-of-age comedy, arrive early and find a good parking space on Saturday April 25 to catch the so-fetch double feature of Mean Girls and Clueless.

Eager snackers can pop into Yatala Drive-In’s 50s-style snack bar, where they can tuck into burgers, fries, hotdogs, doughnuts and other delicious eats in the comfort of a Cadillac booth. If you’re keen to stay in your own car, movie-goers are encouraged to roll up with as many snacks as they like. Our recommendation? Make a small pit-stop at the much-loved pastry institution Yatala Pies for the ultimate old-school experience. If you really want to treat yourself while practising social distancing, you can now hire out an entire premium cinema for your family and friends for just $250 at any indoor Five Star Cinema theatre (Elizabeth Picture TheatreNew Farm Cinemas and Red Hill Cinemas) – talk about luxury!
