Prosecco paired pizza feasts, eclectic dance beats and Mexican cocktails – add these unmissable May events to your calendar
Somehow we blinked and have wound up in May. A month renowned for stunning sunsets, warm days and nights that start to foreshadow the cooler weather heading our way. These perfect mid-autumn evenings demand to be enjoyed and, luckily for you, The Star Gold Coast has packed its May schedule with plenty of events that will keep you off the couch and out dancing, eating and living your best life. From platinum-selling artists playing live on The Lawn, to tequila-soaked feasts, Saturdays spent sipping prosecco by the pool, musical tributes and sporting events, here are some happenings to schedule into your calendar for May …
First and foremost, we must quench our basic human needs, otherwise known as food (cheese and pizza) and drink (tequila and prosecco). Say hola to the new month by celebrating all things Mexican at the Cinco de Mayo Herradura Tequila Dinner at Garden Kitchen & Bar on Thursday May 5. This tequila-soaked feast will have you salivating over a spicy four-course degustation paired to perfection with a special Herradura cocktail. If you can’t make the dinner but still want to partake in the Cinco de Mayo celebrations, you can sip your way through a limited-edition cocktail or two at Garden Kitchen & Bar, Veladora and Atrium Bar from May 5–8.
If you’re a glutton for gluten and all things Italian, perhaps the Prosecco Long Lunch on May 28 is more up your alley. The talented pizza chefs behind Cucina Vivo have teamed up with one of Australia’s best prosecco producers, Dal Zotta, and are putting on a spread that would bring a tear to any nonna’s eye. Served up by the pool, this two-and-a-half-hour degustation will transport you to the back streets of Southern Italy as you feast on the likes of authentic antipasti, mushroom and truffle arancini, plenty of specialty pizza and some mouth-watering handmade cannoli. Tickets are limited to this prosecco-filled feast, so wipe the drool from the corner of your mouth and check availability here.
If your ideal weekend activity involves some sweet live tunes, The Star’s Live on The Lawn is well and truly bringing the bangers. Start your weekend the right way with live RNB every Friday night, accompanied by some post-work tipples and a nibble or two. The entertainment doesn’t stop there, with the new line-up of Saturday night feature acts getting us weak at the knees. The latest season of Live on The Lawn Headliners starts with a DJ set from Touch Sensitive on Saturday May 28. Returning to the music scene with his first official release since 2013, Touch Sensitive is gearing up to treat audiences to some 80s falsetto and floor-filling disco beats. He recently collaborated with Flume and Flight Facilities, so you’ll definitely want to dust off those dancing shoes and get ready to boogie to his beat. Next up is Melbourne-based muso Running Touch, as he brings his signature electronica-pop sound to a DJ set on Saturday June 4. If you don’t recognise his name, you would undoubtedly be familiar with one of the hits that contribute to his more than 150 million streams, like ‘When I’m Around You’ and ‘My Hands’. Rounding out the trio of upcoming acts is none other than Savage, the voice behind the four-time platinum-selling dance record ‘Swing’ with Joel Fletcher and ‘Freaks’ with Timmy Trumpet. Savage defines what it means to be a multi-genre artist after firmly planting himself in the worlds of both hip hop and dance beats. If you’re worried all that dancing will leave you particularly famished, please fear not, The Container Kitchen will be slinging a drool-worthy selection of bites including loaded fries and fried-chicken sandos from Friday to Sunday.
Inside, The Theatre is hosting its own line-up of tunes starting with Mark Vincent and Mirusia combining their classical prowess in ‘From London’s West End to Broadway Orchestrated’, a brand-new show that highlights some of the greatest musical theatre hits on May 14. Those with a burning love for Elvis can’t miss acclaimed sensation Mark Anthony as he brings ‘Elvis – If I Can Dream‘ live to the stage. His dynamic Elvis tribute act combines the songs, costumes, emotions, energy and raw power of Elvis’s greatest hits into a two-hour concert spectacular.
The first weekend of May also brings Mother’s Day and The Star has pulled out all stops to ensure your mum is treated like the queen she is. There is a range of exclusive dining experiences for you to choose from based on your mum’s unique tastes. Cucina Vivo will be plating up a three-course set menu full of traditional Italian dishes alongside a two-hour beverage package for mum’s who love a Mediterranean feast. Nineteen at The Star is serving up a seafood platter packed with Moreton Bay bugs, prawns, oysters and more, finished off with a strawberry basque cheesecake. If your mum is a sucker for a glass of sparkling, Japanese restaurant Kiyomi, Chinese offering Uncle Su and outdoor haven Garden Kitchen & Bar are pouring all mothers a complimentary glass either on arrival or with the set menu. Once lunch is done, spoil mum with the best treat of all – some alone time! Azure Spa offers some seriously luxe packages that will help your mum kick up her feet and sink into a few hours of well-earned relaxation.
Are you stuck on a gift idea for mum, or need an excuse to indulge in a sunset spent tasting delicious wine? Look no further than tickets to Garden Kitchen & Bar’s Wine and Cheese Evening on Thursday June 2. This all-inclusive event will feature wine stalls and free-flowing drops from various local and international wineries, paired to perfection with mountains of our three favourite C-words: cheese, charcuterie and canapes. Your ears will also be treated to a live performance from the one and only Danny Faifai. Danny’s vocals + the wine = dancing all night long! Grab your tickets here.
Last, but by no means least, during May, footy fanatics can catch all of the NRL and AFL action live, large and loud at Sports Bar. We’re talking mega screens, a packed schedule, pumping atmosphere, and, to sweeten the deal even more, you can grab 1kg of wings and a jug of beer for only $35! Sports Bar also lets you get quizzical on a Tuesday night for trivia, and you can try your luck at winning some cold hard cash on Fridays with its Spin the Wheel competition.
