Observe nature’s gentle giants with a spot of whale watching

One of the best things about the chilly season (other than comfort food) is the chance to see nature’s seafaring giants as they migrate past on their way from Antarctica to Hervey Bay. Grab your binoculars and your camera as we’ve round-up a few of the best places to see whales in the wild.

Starting on the southern end, Point Danger on the Tweed Coast offers expansive views north to the Gold Coast and south across the Tweed River so there’s plenty of opportunity to catch the whales in all of their gigantic glory. If it’s a bit chilly out there on the headland, Café D’Bar offers stunning ocean views so you can keep your peepers peeled in comfort.

Moving up the coast, pack a picnic and head to the highest point on Burleigh hill and Miami hill on a clear day. Because the whales travel so close to the shore, your naked eyes will be able to spot them, just look for the big spurts of water or large splashes however binoculars would be an added bonus. Another option is to enjoy a spot of whale watching over a coffee at the SkyPoint Observation Deck. Although at 77-storeys up, binoculars will be a necessity.

Of course, if you want to see these mighty mammals up close, book a tour with one of the city’s many whale watching tour providers. Whales in Paradise has been operating on the Gold Coast for a decade and offers full 360 degree views, walk around decks and water level viewing. Just be sure to pack the seasickness tablets just in case as you never know what kind of swell you’ll encounter out there! Take your whale watching experience to the next level with the There she blows! accommodation package from QT Gold Coast. The package includes two magnificent nights at QT Gold Coast, daily breakfast for two adults at Bazaar and a whale watching tour for two with Gold Coast Whale Adventures, including return transfers from the hotel to Marina Mirage.
