The HOTA Gallery will come to life with photographic works of the 45 finalists on display, which were shortlisted by Cherie McNair, director and CEO of the Australian Centre for Photography, following more than 200 submissions. The 2018 instalment of the Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award, which honours the philanthropy of Mrs Win Schubert AO (1937–2017), will see works from some of the country’s best established photographers, alongside emerging talents. The likes of Abdul Abdullah, Hoda Afshar, Tony Albert, David C Collins and Kieran Smythe-Jackson, Ben Ali Ong, Jessie Boylan, Aletheia Casey and Celeste Cebra are just some of the names you’ll see in the spotlight.

The exhibition, described as ‘a reflection of contemporary practice that examines diverse themes and approaches’, showcases photography’s evolution into one of the most dynamic mediums in the modern-day visual art landscape – and it also acts as a key platform for the photographers (which are of all levels of experience) to showcase their works. This a is big deal in the photography realm. How big? Well, the winner (announced on Friday October 19) will receive a $25,000 acquisitive cash prize, and the Gallery will also award up to $25,000 in acquisitions to a selection of finalists.
